  1. Re:Liquid Nitrogen--WARNING on Do-it-yourself CPU Cooling · · Score: 1

Well, there is another issue here. Basic Physics dictates that the colder objects get the less resistance that is given to the flow of electricity. Now given that microchips use resistances as a gap as opposed to a resistive element (such as carbon) and that the tempratures we are talking about here are very very low (77.4K or less to keep it as a liquid) that resistance would get so low that your chip would most likely stop functioning as there would effectively be no resistance, hence no switching, hence no processing.
Also your chip would be so brittle from being held at this low temp that the slighest vibration could shatter the circuitry of the chip.

I would strongly advise against the use of liquid nitrogen, unless you really want to destroy your computer in a creative manner.

Access to computers should be unlimited and total

I agree with you to a degree, but the impression I got from the book (it is a fantastic read) was that the hackers use of their skills was simply to prove they could. show off as it where, break into a system because it was there. it was never to gain access to sensitive information or to discover secrets. it would appear that the government isn't simply out to display their skills but to use them in a possiably covert manner. Hackers wish to show off an learn.

But that's just my reading of the situation.

  3. CD Testing on Home Cookin': The Electric CD Acid Test · · Score: 5

Well, I don't know about you guys but I have been using this method to test the duribility of CD's for quite a while. in my experience there are 2 really good tests that can be used to determine the quality of a brand of CD's without burning them. First is the Light test, where you hold up to a light sorce and see how much light filters through. second is the Nuke test where you put the CD (it's best to wait until you do a bad burn because this is destructive) in the microwave for 10 sec. when you are done watching the pretty lights take it out and see how much of the CD is flacked. if the a lot of metal layer is flaking off then it is a poor quality CD. if not then it is a good CD.
