We are all thrust into situations in which ethical decisions must be made. The decision made will most often do one thing. Serve ourselves. I just designed a teleportation device... Some defense contractor suit wants to give me $100 million dollars for it. Do I take it? Or do I say no because I am a pacifist "geek" and I like living in a box? Money blurs a lot of borders. Did I invent this to make a profit? No. Will I take a profit from it. Damn straight. Does that make me a suit? Depends on who you ask. Do I care? No because I have just bought a small island full of nothing but beutiful women and beer.
While I'm at it, specialization does not exist. It is a misnomer for being one-dimensional in the work force. I prefer to be multi-dimensional. I read philosophy, sing, play volleyball, watch cartoons and paint. All of these things make me a better problem solver and better at my career, these hobbies also make me a geek by most standards. If specialization were real, and furthermore important, Einstein would have stayed a patent clerk, DaVinci an artist and ACow a cube monkey (instead a really insightful and brilliant poster).
