Here in the US we have a hit cable show, "The Pet Psychic." She moderates "conversations" between pets and their owners--I mean, companions. (Sorry if my scoffing sounds elitist.)
The problem is that such bullshit gets debunked publicly and devastatingly over and over, but continues right on in popularity. Running science as a popularity contest would be the death of its usefulness. Nothing exemplifies this better than evolution, which remains annoyingly true despite the vicious efforts of superstitious idiots and their enabling powermongers. (Whoops, out pops the elitist again.)
Sure, science has power politics and protectionism. It's done by humans, after all. But spare me the stories of repression by the cabal. If there were easier ways to do all of the things we want to do, believe me, we'd all be relieved.
