advertising, if posted to relevant groups, is
not spam in my book, but a way of marketing your

So you were programming gui's in java? Then I can understand, but serverside? I program servlets that run on any from a 486/40 mb to Sparc to Pentium-III and it all works fine.
I have a 486 running 6 full e-commerce shops and it works fine.
Ok it's not going into the millions of users, but for a 486 it is more than ok.
Quite possible that another solution would do better, but how much AND AT WHAT COST? Developing in ugly perl, making updates a real hell?
Using C++, which takes a lot more time to implement?
Php is nice, Zope to, I must say.
But comparing to something like enhydra, it fails miserably; XMLC is very good... No more mixing up of code/html, making updates a breeze...
If someone writes a brilliant, extremely fast XML appserver in C++ (GPLed ofcourse) then I would consider looking there.
It should be capable of using Python, Java, C++ etc as scripting/programming though and not some weird, unsupported homebrew shit.

that will keep M$ VERY happy.
I agree, you should be able to plugin any winmanager and everything should still work. You can manage this by using some core corba server (like the one in Gnome) that works seperately from the winmanager...
Gnome/KDE war sucks; it is a shame that QT/Gtk+ differ so much. They should work together and increase productivity (A Lot).

I think a good way to try to slow these kind
    of tactics, is to do some of what they do;
    make linux more userfriendly.
If Linux would be as easy(easier) to use as Win2k (but still allowing you to get under the hood) and more stable than win2k (as it is now) (and faster with the choice between workstation install & server install), then people would consider it sooner.
So I think programmers and graphics artists(!!!)
should get there tools ready and help KDE & KOffice get bigger.
Also massive attention should be given to projects like www.laetos.org (which is almost dead, because some people(die-hard c programmers et al) seem to think that a OS should be as difficult as possible -> that'll kill linux fast!)

And, going with the original article, it should be almost done or done when win2k comes out.

sorry; exchange server... the biggest joke in software history...
I use nt/linux/solaris daily for mission critical stuff; solaris wins in stability, nt just crashes (we have a dedicated(he has those sh*t msce something or other courses, nt admin) a lot (it aint fast and it aint stable), and linux is fast and quite stable.
Any OS I can crash from userspace is crap; nt is a piece of cake; i just sit and program (does not matter which language) and it crashes at least once in a few days.
Linux is quite easy if you have an out-of-the-box-system; you can secure it enough to make it virtually crashproof.
As far as speed goes; we use linux as file/webserver and it is much faster than the nt mammots we have; this is practical experience; userstats.
I don't know were people use nt for (we tried it as intermediate db server), but it simply cannot handle the load. AIX/DB2 is the only thing we have tried that can handle the 100 mlns of requests we get/day.
If IBM is serious about f*cking M$, then they will help linux get to that point.
btw. m$-sqlserver failed bigtime on our tests.

I don't know win2k, but as far as winnt goes; simple things are easy under windows and not under linux. But advanced stuff is extremely difficult/impossible(==buy some software) under windows and still difficult under linux.
So, for most people, windows is easier, but for the rest un*x is.
If you cannot get your modem/sound working then ask around and, if nec, write your own drivers; that's the idea.
Most people (I hope) want to learn something, win users do not, coz there *is* nothing *to* learn.
What is the use of such a job?
Ofcourse, people have got to make money and win is perfect for this purpose, but win admins are not happy (lot of walking, or so they tell me), so they will be looking for things they *can* be creative in... What's better than an Open OS?
