  1. Re:whatever on Apache Jakarta Commons · · Score: 1

Granted some of the Jakarta commons libraries are a bit lacking/annoying, poorly designed or pointless, but can be a good base for development once patched, even then it's still quicker than rolling all the code yourself.

    IMHO:

I think commons-logging is pointless and wish it would die, Log4J was first, is still much better than JRE logging. commons-logging configuration is grossly inadequate for Log4J because it does not support Log4J XML config.

I find the main Jakarta branch less annoying as I have not had to tweak code there e.g. regexp, oro, log4j.

The Log4J methods debug, info, warn, error and fatal methods are not useful in serious code given that they are useless for logger wrappers and level checks are often done for expensive logging code. I would like to see finer logging levels added to allow better log tweaking e.g. for testing and varying live environments. I also find it naive and annoying that the Log4J only supports static config, so that only one root logger can be used in a JRE, this prevents the use of multiple loggers and filters are not a practical workaround e.g. I may want a separate logger for each website in Tomcat or for multiple programs (in a separate thread) in a JRE.

The last is not a non sequitur, he is saying that the population and the government have forgotten that the governments role is to serves the people, not the people serve the government. A government may contain people, unfortunately those people leaders may forget that it is their job to serve the people to the best of their abilities without abusing their borrowed authority.

IMHO the iTunes top 10 shows how little taste many of their customers and the labels have, IMHO most of those acts and/or songs suck. Maybe it would be different if the labels exercised some real quality control.

  4. Re:No surprise on iTunes DRM Hole Closed · · Score: 1

OK, maybe not in that top 10, but I bet you will find some artists in the charts selling a reasonable amount who look like they are doing well, but are in reality not that well off. You are also forgetting about all the artists who are frustrated by label BS, catch-22 legalese, or loaded down by interlabel transfer fees/points and the signed artists getting fed BS.

Two examples of label BS, for established artists (which is why we know) are:

    1. the Fiona Apple album Extraordinary Machine which was fully produced by Sony 2 years ago, but never released, but leaked by someone to a DJ, and from there to the Internet.

    2. the final Smashing Pumpkins label refused to release their final album so it was leaked by the band to friends, and from there to the Internet, the band split up because of this BS.

Luckily both acts did well beforehand, but other talented acts may not be so lucky.

Only trouble is the label is only giving an advance (i.e. a loan) so in reality you will probably only see a tiny return or even be in debt, even after any nominal royalies, because so much gets sucked up as "expenses"! Wise up, even top 10 artists can be poor!

  6. Re:What if they're already here and observing. on New and Improved SETI · · Score: 1

Spot on. The problems with SETI are: * The whole point of Lasers is that they produce highly directional light, they are probably not pointed at us, so it is very unlikely we will see any light from them. * The speed of light means that any conventional electromagnetic communications we may detect could be centurys old. * Laser beams diverge after a certain distance and can get scattered by dust/gas etc, also power square law means that any light we do see will probably be too weak to compete against major astonomical sources of light. * IMHO any advanced species would probably use something better than Laser light for communications e.g. Masers, gravity waves, quantum entanglement, controlled astronomical events or some space time loophole (e.g. wormholes, folded space) to send long distance communications. * Any long distance communications would probably be very expensive so it is very likely that they would be rare, precisely targeted and heavily encrypted. Basically I think SETI is a waste of time, even it they are right that advance ET life exists, it'd be dumb luck if they pick the right communications channel and vector in space time to see anything, i.e. I don't think SETI have a chance in hell until we can at least do reliable FTL communications in space.
