In your opinion what is the point (other than stupididty) to have merry and pippin convince the ents to go instead of them convincing themselves.?
Seems like a cheap way to heighten their stature when it is not neeeded.

Nope, jackson just made major changes to the main points and ideas of the book. IMYO this ranks up with the sudo animated version of the LOTR. That one at least kept the idea of the plot.
