    Then they go out of business.

    It costs something to run a web site, you can either collect real money (which most people are unwilling to pay) or trade your information for your customer's information.

    You forget that Americans trust the government with personal information even less than Corporations.

    The only situation worse than 1000s of Corporations gathering information, is trusting a government to be the sole gatherer and protector of your personal information (we do so well already with Social Security numbers).
