  1. ssh.com's SSH Secure Shell for Windows on SSH, The Secure Shell · · Score: 3, Interesting
...is quite good, and it's free for noncommercial use (check the website for what their lawyers mean by that.)

I am quite pleased with the latest version for workstations (3.1) in that they have finally implemented somewhat-intelligent URL handling (i.e. clicking on a URL brings up the link in a new window in your default browser) and the look of the app can match the XP look with the click o' a checkbox, for those who care about such things.

Additionally, the Explorer-like secure file transfer window is a godsend for folks like me who:

are too paranoid to have an ftpd running on their servers, and

    appreciate how it Just Works.
If you, say, use your Windows gaming machine to occasionally ssh in and mutt or pine through your mail on your *nix server, I'd recommend checking it out. (No, I have no affiliation with ssh.com, I just like the product.)

  2. I'm in... on Public Enemy Solicits Net Artists To Remix Tracks · · Score: 1

Like I could pass this up -- where the canonical baby boomer remembers where they were when JFK was shot, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard PE - it was 1987, I was driving my mom's Volvo, listening to Rap Attack on KCMU (then the Univ. of WA radio station) and the track was "You're Gonna Get Yours."

There are only a very few artists/producers who have influenced me as much as PE/The Bomb Squad, though I've never produced hiphop, IMO this is testament to the true innovation they brought to electronic music.

I think I'll have a lot of fun with this. It's a shame that I'll have to convert up from .mp3 to .wav or .aiff, but once the vocals are in the mix the lossy compression won't be a big deal -- plus I'm likely going to process the hell out of 'em anyhow.

I'm also very pleased that the vocals don't sound "redone" at all, nor is there beat bleedthrough as is often very apparent on accappellas (notably Eric B. & Rakim tracks like "Microphone Fiend.")

Now if I can just decide on a style...oh, who am I kidding? It'll be electro -- with my domain, how could I do otherwise?

  3. Re:I'd like to see that for BSD on Kernel Configuration As An Adventure · · Score: 2

Hmm. The only real difficulty I've had with FreeBSD 4.x (STABLE) kernel config (the flavor I have experience with ) is certain options not being documented *anywhere* (LINT/Handbook/errata) like

    device agp

which was necessary for me to get my work laptop happy with X.
I actually prefer the one-bigass-textfile config approach, but, of course, YMMV.

  4. don't you mean... on Harlan Ellison on Copyright Infringement · · Score: 1

    K. W. Jeter? Author of Noir, Dr. Adder, Blade Runner 2 and 3, etc. -- one of the finest and most unsung SF writers alive. Noir is indeed an incredibly dystopian novel with intellectual property rights as the central theme, and his treatment of the subject is far superior to any whining by Ellison will ever be. Additionally, the punishment is far worse than merely 'death'.

  5. so call me cynical, but... on FBI Shuts Down Website · · Score: 3

...isn't this exactly what the "artist" intended? By the FBI's apparent unconstitutional censorship, he ends up with far more press than he would have gotten if his poor-taste stunt had been left to be ignored.

This does not excuse the FBI's behavior, but points to a lack of intelligent leadership in the Bureau as well as lack of common sense by the artist.

It also is a sad reflection on any media outlet that would have covered this "artist" before his rights were violated -- his domain name says it all.

If everyone had ignored him, he probably would have gone his way toward ignominy that is every American's God-given right -- the US Gov't took that away from him, and US taxpayers will likely end up paying him a hefty settlement.

    Hmmph!
