while the os may support it, the physical configurations of the cards may not
i've seen several nics which in the interest of not having those damn annoying dongles take up two pc card slots, and i've also seen wireless lan cards that seem to (maybe they don't actually) use both spaces because of the antenna
not to mention with a laptop, power consumption is potentially at a premium and i'm sure the cards will use some power even if disabled (if you aren't going to use it on battery, there seems to be little point in getting a laptop... but thats just my opinion)
the college i attend has a laptop program, which requires incomming freshmen to pay out the nose for a 2 year lease on a laptop, then another 2 year lease on a newer laptop, which if you graduate you get to keep.
sounds good right, well the major problem is we get compaq laptops because one of their vice presidents is a alumnus (i think gender is correct there, in any case, the vp is a member of the alumni:). not because of quality or price considerations.
i haven't worked with too many laptops before, but i did not envision them requiring duct tape all over to stay in one piece (compaq armada e500), and yes peoples backlights do go out, the system isn't totally unusable, its just dark:)
that whatever method it uses to get data about the cd (probably using some part of ie) gets a cookie from the server it uses, maybe a scare unique id, or maybe just a session id that some servers like to send with every request.
the first thing i do w/ an audio cd is rip it to mp3, so i wouldn't know what windows media player does on my computer when i play a cd, the spiny noises of the cd-rom drive when its playing audio annoy me to no end, i'm used to the spiny noises of hard drives though:)
as for win xp making winamp not run as other posters have mentioned, i really doubt that would happen for a few reasons:
1. people would be upset
2. nullsoft would be upset
3. nullsoft is an aol time warner company
4. aol time warner is not somebody microsoft would want upset with them
also it seems to me that if win xp did make winamp not run, the people at nullsoft would figure out a loophole fairly quickly, they seem to be pretty bright people
hopefully this will help them work out problems

Bluetooth Bombs

· Score: 1
assuming the companies developed their bluetooth products in a vacuum, this network test can give them tons of valuable input to improve the products so they better work with other products.
either way, it shows there are definately a few problems in the current stages of development, but for a first trial of a large scale network, failure isn't a bad thing
we have computer engineering, not computer science, but *shrug* close enough
we have a program where you get a year of instruction in germany, in english, during the junior year
when you come back, you are still on track to graduation, and assuming you survive your senior year, you graduate with both a bs from this school, and a useless* degree from the german university
* it is useless because its a 4 year degree, and most german employers demand a 5 year degree, but it looks good to us employers i suppose
if you want to know more, email me, and i'll tell you what school i go to (i don't want to blatently advertise for them on/.)
Also, most machines now allow you to change the apparent (and sometimes the actual) MAC address fairly easily. This is generally a Bad Thing, but makes it easy to spoof traffic authenticating by MAC address.
What exactly is bad about chaning apparent MAC addresses (i can understand not wanting to change actual address)
good uses for it:
if you want redundancy at the nic level, it works best if both/all cards are using the same mac address, in case a card dies, a seemless changover can take place, without having to wait for arp things.
if a nic decides suddenly that its mac address is actually 00:00:00:00:00:00 but works fine in all other respects (actually has happened to me), the cable company doesn't want to add that address to its configuration files, so its easier to tell the os (win98 in this case) to use the old address
where it would be a bad thing would be where you were relying on it for authentication, but using something like that doesn't seem like a good form of authentication, because spoofage has always been possible, perhaps requiring reprogramming a prom of some sort if the software won't do it
They probably think its horrible because you're popping eyes, which is arguably not a good thing:)
*shrug* i see where you're going with your argument, but i'm not sure that i agree with you, although it should be noted that most developed countries do have laws against the kind of sweatshops and the kind of prostitution we're talking about so there is deffinately bad mojo for both
However, because of the complexity of Amazon's complete patent, we weren't able to match every claim. And in fact, all the prior art that was submitted specifically for the Web confirms Amazon's belief that they were doing something original. All of the Web submissions focused on the shopping cart model, with multiple stages for checkout. Even systems such as MiniVend, the open source web commerce shopping cart, which could easily be configured for One-click, was never demonstrably used in that way.
As anyone who has had to work with minivend (i worked with version 3.1x when it was current) it is not easily configured to do anything, although version 4.x is reportedly pretty decent, and it is possible that version 3 were also good.
I'm not sure what the problem is with sweatshops...
for the people running them, they get cheap labor, and can make a decent amount of money
for the people buying from them, they get cheap assembly, and can use pass the savings on to consumers who are unwilling to pay higher costs
for those working in the them, it gives them* a way to earn much needed money (if they didn't need it that much, would they work at thsoe rates?)
*them or those who control them anyhjow
this is a side effect of a market economy, if there is a way to produce something cheaper, it woill be done.
the only way to solve the 'problem' is to develop cheaper alternatives for production, and more appealing options for the workers
of course, as soon as we get all third world nations are up to wage, safty, etc levels of today's united states, other forms of explotation will be considered horribly unethical (and probably called sweatshops as a metaphor)
three characters is plenty for determining which viewer/editor to use offhand, and limiting yourself to 8 characters for a name prevents you from creating attrocities such as 'this file is a document which contains the bulk of my work in the physics lab writeup for the lab i completed on march 3rd of 2001 which incidentally was a foggy day.microsoft word'
consider the precis (i think it needs an accent) from your english composition class, the idea was write a summary of the work in 30 words, no more no less, by giving yourself an artificial constraint you have to be more creative (or something).
there is nothing stopping anybody from using longer names for most things, they just don't feel the need. a good nested directory structure can help determine what the file is about, and some kind of title in the file itself doesn't hurt
actually, each key has 4 markings on it.... with the exception of the three for the index finger which have 2 markings
the marking on the key itself in black is what you get if you press that key by itself
the index finger keys have different colors, and if you press one of those, and another key, you get whatever is in that color. these are there as a memory aid etc, there are other chord combos too, but they aren't printed on the keyboard due to space constraints
the original poster was asking if the owner of the establishment (etc) would be liable for blocking the call to 911 (and all other calls) and preventing emergency medical attention from arriving (or arriving as quickly)
i can see where jamming cell phone where they are horribly annoying is good... however it would be better if there was some kind of cell phone maker organization that setup somethign were you could buy a device that would make tell cell phones that they are in a 'quiet zone' and then they would not ring audibly and if their user doesn't pick up, inform the person on the other side that their use is in a 'quiet zone' and take a message...
there could potentially be override ability for actual need (ie emergency type things) somehow (*shrug* i'm not going to actually make a device, i'm just throwing out ideas:)
yes, but i think the/. article was refering to 2. a, b, or c
*shrug*
i'm sure it was prolly just the submitter, not the article being bizarre...
but yes under 1. muscles are motors, and of course anything that moves would have a motor, as something imparts motion on it, through physical contact, gravitation, magnetisim or some such thing...
webpages that are renderable to plain text (w3m/lynx/emacs' browser) are quite probably more easily rendered to audio outputs......
if these people want to insult people with visual handicaps, i guess thats their problem, but if enough people with visual handicaps got together, appropriate lawsuits could be used to inspire people to avoid using web design that doesn't work right.....
i don't know of any reason to use network solutions anymore, their prices are much higher, and their service is much slower, and harder to use.
i haven't experimented with any registrars other than netsol and tucows/opensrs, but opensrs is a million and a half times better than netsol, changes made to the domain usually propigate within 24 hours (the delays are due to the root-servers) and hit whois instantly.
also the domain transfer procedure seems well done, and the web interface for changing domains is sweet.
not to mention a price of $10/domain year. the only issue is that they don't contract with users directly, only resellers ($250 minimum deposit) but if you know anybody in isp or internet consulting, you can probably easily convince them to get an account with tucows.
the support people were really friendly last time i needed support as well
i would imagine other alternative registrars are good as well, but i haven't used any
so basically what you're saying is that using a web server would be less secure than using a file server?
i think that a web server could be more secure, since the amount of damage you could do with a users account would probably be less, if it was run off a fileserver, everybody would need direct access to the files, but a web interface could limit the things you could do.
in either case, if the server with all the data is compromised, you're screwed

how do you get that to happen

ooooh thats a good idea too
i could definately see using that, if i had a mobile phone
i think you missed the point....
the original poster was asking if the owner of the establishment (etc) would be liable for blocking the call to 911 (and all other calls) and preventing emergency medical attention from arriving (or arriving as quickly)
yes that would work :)
with options such as that, flat out jamming seems incredibly stupid and graceless
(thank you for linking that btw)

i certainly don't know of many
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/(h|s)da

do that several times... if you're really paranoid you can use

just because the act of producing electricity with solar panels is 'enviromentally friendly' doesn't mean the panels are....
for example what kind of manufacturing processes are used, and how do they effect the environment?
i haven't looked into this in a while, but i know a few years back, some of the processed used to make solar cells were pretty bad.
don't mod this up as informative, there are no links.
