So, prior to DeCSS, it was not possible for consumers to copy encrypted DVDs.
do they honestly worry about piracy from consumers?
if i were a movie studio i would worry about large scale piracy, rather than small scale piracy....
with dvd, you can let your friend borrow your treasured movie without worrying that it will come back in worse condition, unless your friend scratches it or does something stupid like that
but with vhs, you know its going to come back in worse shape, and the question is only how much worse, and depending on how much you treasure your movie, you may just give him a copy to protect your investment
i would think that most dvd pirating would take place with 'professional' equipment
the studios do write to the section that holds the keys, so it is possible
i would imagine that dvd players _have_ to read from the section that contains the keys or the existance or non-existance of data there is irrelevent
if i were selling pirate dvd's i'd want them to look as close as possible to the real thing, and i'd imagine writable dvd's look a lot different than normal ones
the problem is, they don't want the people selling you your system to overclock it without telling you....
if you buy a system that is specificially overclocked its cool
but if you buy a pIII 600 system, and its running a pIII 500 chip, w/ no extra cooling, in a piece of crap case it has a higherpossibility of overheating and then who do you blame?
intel, cause their chip overheated
then you go get an amd chip, and intel has lost market share
I disagree.... its more like somebody is calling your BBS and annoying everybody, so you set your modems not to answer if the caller ID says its his number.
As operators of news servers, there is a perfect legal right to deny service to anybody for any reason.
What I wonder is if they can do the scanning under the current TOS, or if they'll have to update their TOS first, which w/out reading it i estimate requires a 30 day or so period between posting and the effective date.
hmmm, which credit card proccessor that will process cards like that for a cost that the people who use the service i set up (not that i set it up well or anything, but i get $7.50/hr and only work part time....) will be willing to pay, and i'll take a look at it.
also re storing credit cards on the server, as far as i know, there is _no_ reason to do that for a one time purchase thing anyhow, which is what a lot of the customers are selling
on the internet, nobody gives a crap what gender, race, nationality, hand prefrence, sexual preference, etc etc you are, unless you make an issue out of it
now your domain, and your typing speed, those are real issues, and easily changable
seriously though, if people would just stop bitching about there being an inequality, and start doing something about it, it would disappear readily
if i were in a position to hire ppl, i'd want to hire somebody who know what they were doing, and could do the job to suit my needs, and if anybody does anything different, i'd think its bad business practices (and subject to a shareholder lawsuit?)
well.... if the victim actually payed attention while their tv dinner was being rung up at the store, they would notice
(i assume since there is an internet lookup for cooking instructions, they just run off the UPC code)
dude, debian potato is frozen

i dunno... theres a liscene attached to the data.....
my Dune dvd (universal studios) says:
WARNING: For home use only. Unauthorized public performance, broadcasting or copying is a violation of applicable laws.
the warning would imply that you are not within your rights to view it at the office, which would suck if your office is at home....

I've emailed studios to let them know they're losing customers.
how exactly are they losing customers?
were you previously a dvd customer?
did you buy vhs tapes? those aren't usable on linux machines either
stop being a zelot, and think

well perhaps it would be more cost effective, but as of now, there is no SMP atlon board, so its a moot point
does overclocking produce fumes that induce highness?
how can you compare an overclocked chips price to a non-over clocked, but overclockable chip?
that makes no sense
especially since clock speed is not really a great measure of anything other than clock speed....
it used to say how many instructions per time period, but it doesn't do that anymore w/ all the different execution units....
not that overclocking is a bad thing but clock speed fixation is
err umm yeah :)
maybe just an exchange though?
they're talking about proxy servers that external users can use
like if i set up a general proxy on my box at home and the whole world (including spammers) used it to do newsgroups....
if its just a proxy for in your house, and spam comes out of it, i wonder where the spam came from?

What access provider would want to be UDP'ed?

ok point taken

hmmm why would you pay interest on your credit card? is an aweful big waste of money
same goes for an annual fee, i recently got my first credit card, no annual fee, and no way i'm going to pay interest
heres my semi-informed answer
when you get the cc number, proccess it immediately, and don't keep it anywhere on your system
of course then your proccessor could always be hacked, but thats a different story isn't it?
hmm only if the bios, and all the software for the dsps is GPL'ed
hey he's not a jerk, he's just having a good time
and i applaud him for that
The linked article would lead me to believe that this is the first on to run linux, not the first one ever.
/. title would lead you to believe the other thing.

i think its in the gibson novels, so you just don't know any of the slang words of the internet
i'd say initial popularity was cause it came with tetris (face it, tetris is adictive)
and then they made other good games for it, and the marketing for it has always been pretty good
perhaps if you increase your threshold, the trolls won't get to you?
its really not that hard to do
**not posting anonymously cause i'm not a karma wh0re
well you still need a home theatre system if you want to have a nice set of 32" speakers :)
(i'm sorry, i'm not going to feed that directly with a sound card, it wouldn't feel right)
