  1. Yeah, kids hate gaming... on The Video Game Generation Grows Up · · Score: 1

Whilst I can empathise with some of the things being said here, i.e. we all feel we have less time for ourselves, it's important to remember that time spent with your family (especially your own children) is real quality time - both for you and them!

I have two young daughters both of whom have grown up around computers and understand (partially) that my work involves how computers "talk" to each other. They've played educational PC games from when they were around 3 years old and have moved on to all manner of computer skills as they've grown up. They love nothing more than being allowed to play a "proper" game (e.g. Race Driver 3) over the network against another member of the family. This gives me time to enjoy gaming and see them enjoying themselves - don't worry, I kick them out into the fresh air every so often as well... to prevent overheating ;-)

Also, the article doesn't mention the Wii, or Gamecube, even though Nintendo has been making games suitable for all ages for years. In particular they have many games suitable for the "5 minute" play that parents get between tasks!

  2. Nintendo for young and old on Gaming When We're 64 · · Score: 1

I reckon that the current crop of Nintendo titles would easily appeal to senior gamers for much the same reason that they appeal to younger gamers:

    • Bright, colourful, simple/cartoon-like graphics
    • Straight forward, easy-to-master gameplay
    • Comfortable controllers with simple game controls
    • Quick 5-minute games

I'm talking about things like Mario Tennis, Double Dash, Golf and such like. The concepts involved in these games have been around for ages; these are just the latest version. I've watched my kids from age 4 play these with their Grandpa age 65. The games tend to have multiple ways to control them - if you can only manage to use button A then the game copes with this and gives you basic control.

Plus, you're going to need the 4-way multiplayer mayhem of "Super Smash Brothers Melee" in that retirement home!

  3. 18 inches? on Is Your Laptop At Risk While Traveling? · · Score: 1

The article talks about drop testing kit from a height of 18 inches (or 36 inches later on) but I've watched bags being thrown out of the hold of an aircraft onto a waiting truck. The drop from the hold to the truck was possibly greater than 36 inches vertically but that doesn't take into account the horizontal velocity involved in covering the 8 - 10 feet these bags had to fly to reach the truck.

I doubt any fragile equipment survived a trip in the hold on that flight.
