I'm glad to see that at least somebody besides myself realizes that this is by no means a blow to democracy and that it is an attack on privacy if anything. And all you folks out their tooting your horns about how democracy is being destroyed.. grow a brain!. Democracy is a terrible thing. Mob rule is democracy. Those of us fortunate enough to be living in the United States are living under a constitutional republic.. not a democracy. If you truly want to protect freedom of the individual (and for some reason I think most people on slashdot do have respect for freedom) you will find that democracy is an enemy of that freedom.. just as communism and socialism are. If you don't like what your elected officials are doing, simply VOTE THEM OUT at the next election. Write letters to them telling them that you do not support what they are doing. "Well what if the majority of people want privacy" you may ask? Just because a system works some of the time.. does not mean it will always work. What will you do when the majority of people resent intelligent people? Or people who are employed in the IT industry? Or how about when a majority resents people of a jewish background.. is preserving what the majority wants appropriate then?
Hey buddy.. The electoral college was designed for 2 reasons.. and BOTH are still a concern even 200 years after the design of the electoral college.
1. We still have small states in the union. The president is elected by the states, not the people. The electoral college gives small states a much larger voice than a popular vote would.
2. Half of the states still allow the electors to
have descretion.. not that this is much of an issue because the electors are pre-selected by the party they are to represent, and the party tends to select party loyalists and party funders.. not just some random group of people. Please also keep in mind that the state legislature can always override the vote of the people and select the electors themselves. I believe that only once in the history of our country has an elector voted for somebody she has not pledged to vote for.. and in that case she was just some idiot who voted for the runningmate as opposed to the candidate running for president (that's right she didn't vote for the opposing party, kinda silly if you ask me).
And now.. for a simple analogy (my leftist friends hate my analogies) to do away with the electoral college and go by the popular vote would be like having a football game and disregarding the score. It would be like declaring the winner based on the total number of yards completed by each team. Forget the touch-downs and the field goals... those shouldn't count should they?
When the United States of America formed, it was part of the contract (the constitution) that they would not loose the power to elect their leader.. thus preserving the sovereignty of the states. To give this power to the people would take away that sovereignty. Presidential campaigns would no longer be nation wide if we moved to a popular vote. Presidents would simply concentrate on areas with huge cities. Rural States would not be represented due to a lack of importance in the election.
So, when small states no longer exist, and mobs of people are no longer trying to vote themselves funds from the treasury, then I'll agree with you and say that the electoral college is out of date.
Here are some things for you to ponder about this ballot:
1. At least 96% of the people were not confused by the ballot
2. The ballot was designed by a Democratic Party official
3. The people of Palm Beach County had an opportunity to view the ballot and comment on it before the election. No objections were entered.
4. The Florida Democratic Party approved the ballot before the vote.
Yeah.. it looks like Jeb Bush is all over this one. Jeb has allready distanced himself from the recount so that there will be no conflict of intrest. Maybe you can explain to me why Gore supporters are so idiotic that they can't figure out how to punch a hole pointed to clearly by an arrow?
As an artist.. here is my impression of the ballot.. which can be viewed on Neal's Nuze on www.boortz.com. I've also seen the same ballot on cnn and other places and it is very clear. My ballot here in Atlanta Georgia looked similar but had Gore on the top of the ticket instead of Bush.

Is this really soo difficult?
You want to talk about statistics? Is it soo unbelievable that out of the 14,000 members of the
Reform Party in Palm Beach, that 3,000 out of those 14,000 would vote for Buchanan??? Is that SOO HARD TO GRASP? That's 21.4% of the Reform Party supporters voted for Buchanan.. yeah that's one hell of a spike folks. This is what you liberals get for pandering to the lowest common denominator.. a few idiots who will embarass themselves nationally by claiming they can't follow an arrow.
