I live in Cary, NC and use Cingular with a Motorola v60gi (GSM) phone and the quality has been exceptional as compared with AT&T TDMA service. Having purchased a Siemens 2.4 Ghz two-line POTS phone, I suspect that the Siemens phone is the culprit. Although there may not be any correlation with their wireless devices, it took three Siemens units experiencing a drop-out in the incoming audio volume when the handset mic was used to convince me that Siemens telephony sucks. Possibly a bad batch, but then they are guilty of horrible quality control.
My primary concern with Cingular is that GSM network coverage is confined mostly to major metro areas and interstates. Their billing leaves much to be desired, too. My fiancee just returned from a tour of several US cities and we received a huge Cingular bill even though we supposedly have the Nationwide plan. Seeems that even though Buffalo, NY is painted "Cingular Orange" on their coverage map, they prefer to bill as roaming.
