  1. Re:Double is standard on IT's Most Outrageous Markups? · · Score: 1

The StorageTek part was a fiber to db9 Transceiver. The tech told me something to the effect of "The part cost $172, oh wait thats our cost, its $1200." That on top of the $385 an hour they charge for labor. Turns out we had a broken one I dug up and got replaced on warranty for free, but you know the damned thing cost virtually nothing to make.

  2. Our bandwidth went up because of competition on ISPs Experiment With Broadband Download Capping · · Score: 2, Informative

Roadrunner (Time Warner cable) bandwidth just went up around here (Rochester, NY) due to competition with Frontier DSL. Roadrunner used to be 2 Mbps and is now 3.2 Mbps. The Full DSL around here is 3.0 Mbps. Personally I get the $26.95 DSL that is 256K down and 128K up which is plenty for home use and saves me money.

  3. RAID from the How-TO is not that bad on Managing RAID on Linux · · Score: 1

I recently installed raid out of the how-to and other information I googled for. I really did not have much problem with it. I took a basic configuration and then started playing with it to make it work the way I wanted. Seemed pretty intitive compaired to many other things out there to configure. As for why to use Software Raid? I had an old box lieing around with no HW raid but needed a non-production server as a sandbox, bingo I had one. This turned out to be a really good idea because soon after I built it one of the disks went bad and I was albe to save all my work.
