  1. Re:Closed mindedness of some companies on From System Administrator to Developer? · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the concerns I hit at work is the gulf between the sysadmins and the programmers. Too few sysadmins are good at programming and too few programmers know anything about keeping the system maintainable. We just went through a bunch of sysadmin resumes and those that got attention included programming. If you are a sysadmin who can program it looks great in the interview and can build your niche as you transition. If you are considering this as a transition path, go for it! You'll put yourself ahead of others in the job search. And as you add professional experience to your degree you can move around in the career and get paid to improve yoursel

Same here. My edition has, I think, 4-6 different colors of highlighting from re-reading. After "Running LInux", this got me into Unix, and is one of two technical books I actually read on vacation. (The other being Cheswick and Bellovin) If you want a broad understanding of unix, get this book. Then read a book on your flavor of choice. Then go crash boxes and bring them back to life. It pays better than just doing all the time.

Ah, I see you need education, Grasshopper. Speaking the language of love and romance is vital to successful geeks. First, to be successful, you must put aside the thought of "just one day a year". It may be difficult, but plan on starting to do something romantic *at least* once a month. Better is to have a date night *every week*, without fail. Let your parner help plan the dates, and even if you don't get enthused about their hobbies at least learn enough to discuss them intelligently. Some of you may ask why this is necessary for a geek. It is simple, so simple. You can expect yourself to want something throughout the year. If you have treated your partner well, they will be much more inclined to treat you the same. If they feel they have to scrape to get anything from you, they will probably not easily give in for anything you want. I have found this to work over the last 12 years of marriage, and I plan on continuing the cycle.
