Jesus, I may be a lazy fucking bastard and you probably made great points, but I couldn't make myself attack that gigantic paragraph. It's hard enough reading a page with colums 18 inches wide without having to contend with gigantic paragraphs. There is a reason newspapers and magazines have colums 2-5 inches wide with most paragraphs 1-2 inches high.
I already know I am a lightweight not to make the effort anyway, but my eyes aren't the greatest these days. If I can find some decent verbal screen reading software I will read your comment. Meanwhile I will take the inevitable karma hit for whining like this.
Me, me! I know this one! A bond is a firm assurance. I will give you a piece of paper that matures at a certain date and promise to pay you back then if you give me money now. I'll even give you back more money than you give me (time value of money). A bond is borrowing money to spend on something I want because I don't have enough of it. But I am a government, so I don't like to call it taking out a loan; also I don't have any collateral. I'm going to call it a bond instead. It sounds all warm and fuzzy. "My word is my bond".
Basically, it's always an advantage to have more money. The problem isn't money, it's the willingness to be an asshole to get it, and using it to hurt people in order to preserve and increase your power.
Actually, there are those of who think the problem *IS* the power of money (and lack of it) in the legal system.
They can truthfully say it was a mistake as long as they don't say what they were mistaken about.
Would you mind running that thought by me again? So if I tell you I made a mistake without further specifying, I am not being truthful?
While we're on the general subject of mistakes, anyone who states they never made a mistake is a damn liar. There are worse things than owning up to a mistake.
It's a vexing headline, isn't it, because of what it tells us about ourselves. Turns out it's accurate in a literal sense. Qantas DOES "want" the information for simple economic reasons, and they may be using a somewhat underhanded method of coaxing people to give it to them, but they are not really stealing it. Of course when we read the headline we see a picture of guys wearing trenchcoats skulking around in dark alleys peering at our lives through our windows, poring through our trash, and planting bugs.
Not that many places do have guaranteed freedom of speech, and those like the US who OSTENSIBLY do (ha!) find that it is getting to be more and more of a joke. What they do is invent the crime of "hate", corrupt the courts to accept that absurdity of a concept as a valid legal principle, and characterize speech they don't like as "hate speech". Nobody is in "favor" of hate, right?
Every hour of every day is a good time to stand against tyranny and oppression. Granted it's not directly related to the particular story under discussion.
Good for you, sonny. I haven't seen 50 in almost two decades. I'm never going to be freer than I am now; hell, I'm never going to be AS free as I am now, and that's not saying much; but mercifully I won't have to live with this regimented oppressive shit too much longer. Bunch of pussies.
At least I have my yesterday. I got to live in the most glorious period of the most glorious place on the earth.
So people are running UNSECURED wi-fi? That's fine, I personally don't see anything wrong with that so far.
And people are concerned and upset that their wi-fi is noted in a database? I can see why they might be... however...
But the same person is running UNSECURED wi-fi AND at the same time is concerned and upset that their wi-fi is noted in a database? That's horse shit. That is real stupidity.
Pretty certain you ARE joking, but in case you are not, linux comes with a FAR richer set of tools in that vein and they are all free. And linux tools are designed to hook together in bash to whip out any ad hoc construction you need in quick order
Basically, abso-damn-lutely. However, the last PDP-11 model was introduced in 1990. I'm not sure when production ceased, but this hardware has to be pretty long in the tooth by now. How long do you reckon the hardware will keep running? How long will repair parts, even down to the IC level, be available? How long will peripherals be available? A PDP-11 still running in 2050 would be like a 1953 computer still running today.
So? A "generation" is commonly held to be 30 years; the average child (note: not first-born) being born when the parents are approximately 30. Secondly, TFA specifies two generations "coming and going", which means two ENTIRE generations pass; not just one passing and the second one beginning.
That is 60 years, not 37 years. TFS, if not TFA, which I didn't read, is officially stupid.
Can we just agree to end the conservative/liberal horse shit when talking about the supreme court (and pretty much everything else)? It's a false polarization meant to suppress individual thought on important matters.
In cases like this it's individual rights vs statism. Simple as that. So-called "conservatives" are big on certain elements of statism, and so-called "liberals" are also big on certain elements of statism (sometimes, but mostly not, the same elements). If the five who formed the majority court opinion happen to be commonly labeled "conservative", that is of no interest to me whatsoever. If they are statist tools, you can bet your ass I am damned interested in that.
In the end, too many of the SC justices are assholes selected by assholes who are elected by slack-jawed morons.
Er, that is the exact purpose of the reading of the "Miranda" rights. It is to ensure that the defendant knows he does not have to confess, so that if he then confesses he is doing so deliberately. Assuming he wasn't tortured and undue coercion was not applied, of course his confession will be accepted, because no rights were denied to him. Obviously, the case must still be properly investigated, because simply accepting the first confession received at face value without any supporting evidence whatsoever is considered faulty detective work.
It is called the right not to incriminate oneself, not the prohibition against incriminating oneself.
Now, if you can show that he is brain damaged or profoundly incompetent/stupid, or perhaps temporarily deranged by circumstances, you then still have a case to throw out the confession.
But you have to give our AC credit. His reponse was spectacularly funny in a whooshy kind of way.

But that was 1.21 jiggawatts, not 1.21 gigawatts.

Why stop there? Hit them with confiscatory peak rates so bad that the most vulnerable will have to retreat to caves.
Supple and demand. Rich pigs are not inconvenienced in the slightest. They can still put air conditioners outdoors to keep their patios cool.
What the FUCK?! Parent is not a troll. Fix the mod. Argue the merits.
Actually, there are those of who think the problem *IS* the power of money (and lack of it) in the legal system.
This. Hell yes, this. It would no longer make sense to call it Kickstarter in these cases; maybe KickThecorruptSystemInThePants.

Incorrect actually.
Can you support your allegation that Apple requires payment? Perhaps you are unaware that Apple transferred the Thunderbolt trademark to Intel. Thunderbolt is not at all proprietary to either Apple or Intel; at least since a couple of years ago. It is Intel who controls Thunderbolt now, and they furnish royalty-free licenses. The allegation is that Intel's policies are holding back Thunderbolt, but Intel denies this fairly convincingly.
And in case somebody out there doesn't believe this actually happened, INTEL: Usage Guidelines for the Thunderbolt(TM) Trademark.
To be fair, when Apple DOESN'T fuck up, they don't fuck up.
Meanwhile the rest of us use USB 3.0 and eSATA and have a FAR wider choice of drives which cost far less.

"Fuck no" is two better words under the cirsumstances.
But will you be able to buy a new 486 in 2050?
