At the risk of bringing in Trek, There was an episode (with the war fought by computers) where they pointed out that war is SUPPOSED to be messy and bloody. That's why it's to be avoided.
I second that. I work on artillery control systems. It's not just something you can hack out. Guys, if you make a mistake, you don't just get a BSOD. If you make a mistake, people DIE. The wrong people. Not the bad guys.
I find it hard to believe that/.'ers would accept that AI is sufficient to:
control a plane, AND
determine targets AND
identify friendlies
all while in combat. Of course a human is going to be pulling the trigger. If these things are remote control, fine. But don't BS me and say that a computer will do all that.
The first IBM 101-keys came with the 8MHz AT's. I know, I had one of the last original 8MHz AT.s God I loved that keyboard. And, it could double as a bulletproof vest if necessary!
Copperhead shells require a Ground/Vehicular Laser Locator/Designator (G/VLLD) for final approach. The shell is programmed with the laser code for that particular G/VLLD before firing, and locks onto that pattern on final approach. Generally, the party calling for fire paints for the final 10 seconds of the shell trajectory.
I'm not a Luddite, but the dead-tree method of voting does have its advantages. Two of them being:
Audit Trail. Each ballot can (in theory) be tracked from the polling place to the final re(re-re-re-re...)count
Security. It's very difficult to h4x0r a paper ballot (punch card or otherwise)
What happens when we go to internet voting, and J. Random Script Kiddie steps up and announces: "1 4M 50 31337! 1 h4x0r3d the v073!!!" How can we prove or disprove his claim?
Where is the audit trail?
Hmmm. that sounds familiar... Haven't the Republicans been spending the last four years telling anyone and everyone that more people voted against Clinton than for him? At least he had a plurality of the popular vote. Dubya won't even have that.
On election night, Brokaw talked with a Florida Election Commision official who said that the 10-day rule applied to overseas absentees (i.e. postmark by 7th, receive by 17th).
In CA, the secretary of state (or your local registrar of voters, I don't remember exactly) sends you an "Official Sample Ballot". This is state sanctioned, not a pollster/campaigner thing.
CA also mails you out a "voter information pamphlet" with statewide candidate statements, the full text of all propositions (in legalese), the state legislative analyst's analysis of the propositions, and pro/con/rebuttals by supporters of both sides of the props. Los Angeles county does the same thing for county-wide offices and measures.
Two of Maine's four electoral votes still go to the overall state-wide winner. Each of the other two votes goes to the candidate receiving the most votes in each of Maine's two congressional districts.
This makes sense. Remember, the EC votes are one per Senator and one per Representative. So two winner take all votes represents the Senate votes, and the votes per district represent the Reps.
Disclaimer: I don't live in Maine, but it's good to see that they do stuff that makes sense.
Doesn't matter. Even if Gore's concession wasn't retracted, if the electoral vote put him on top, he wins the presidency. There ain't nothing in the Constitution about "The winner of the Electoral College Vote is the President unless he concedes."
Read the fscking post. The submitter specifically talked about things like "days on my co-op when my mentor and other engineers had to come up with ways to entertain their children (when they had to be out of school, snowstorm, et al.) and had to do this instead of concentrating on work"
The submitter is not talking about full-time day care in this instance.
Yes, my wife did stay home to watch the kids, but we still put them in daycare 2-3 days a week because SHE was going stir-crazy.
And no, we didn't consider it abrogating our parental responsibility. If you don't like that, you can bite my shiny metal ass.
I want this. My kids often have "pupil-free" days at school. Even with advance warning, we can't get daycare, because their sitters *are* in school, and their grandparents work. Of course, daycare would hve to be available on an "as needed" basis, not as a pre-signup thing.
The only problem is that a lot of the missed days come from dealing with sick kids, and no daycare in their right mind should accept sick kids (can you say "liability"? I knew you could...).
But it would definitely be a step in the right direction. I've interviewed in a few places, and probably not gotten an offer because I've told them flat out that I "have a life". It's about time the industry got a little bit "family friendly".

Trek did this one back in '66 or '67. The episode was called "A Taste of Armageddon".
This is just adding some kill AI as well.
Much easier said than done.
Remember, if you fsck up while writing the AI, PEOPLE DIE. And not the enemy.

But in real-life combat, your computer does not know the exact location of the enemy.

Where is the audit trail?
Doesn't the Uncertainty Principle still apply?
It is compulsory to vote if your 18 and over
What are the penalties for not voting?
What happens if you're sick and can't get out to vote?
What happens if you're out of the country for a personal emergency ("Oh, I can't come to Dad's funeral, I have to vote!")?
Hmmm. that sounds familiar... Haven't the Republicans been spending the last four years telling anyone and everyone that more people voted against Clinton than for him? At least he had a plurality of the popular vote. Dubya won't even have that.
We live in interesting times...
can't recall the name of the company though
Voter News Service. I couldn't find a website for them through either Altavista or Google.

Sounds pretty official to me.

I heard on the radio this morning that Buchanan said those were most likely Gore votes.
Now, I personally think Buchanan is a Nazi, but AFAIK, he always says what he thinks, not what is expedient.
So maybe PacBell gets their block for UUNet. But at home, my DSL line is 63.xxx.xxx.xxx
Here's the Florida Election Commision Website. It's slashdotted.
It is their time, if you are a graduate student. Grad students are paid by the university, so you are, in a sense, working for them.
Bullshit. I was a grad student for 7 years and never got one cent from the university.

At 215EST CNN and NBC called it for Bush. Fox beat them by about 5 minutes at 210EST (for me it was 2315PST and 2310PST)...
Although there were noises that Gore might demand a FLA recount...
PSINet sells nationwide dialup service to ISPs, *that* is why so much spam originates from their network.
Yep. PacBell is a 63.xxx.xxx.xxx

To hell with my moderator points...
