Yep, same here in Portugal. As always, USA people believe their country represents the whole world. A brief Wikipedia search shows that the only countries that DON'T have an identity system implemented are Australia, UK and USA (Bangladesh, China and India are implementing theirs).
I have an ID since I'm 10 years old, and I did never feel I had Big Brother watching over my shoulder or my liberties as a citizen in risk. Much the opposite: it is very reassuring to be able to prove that I am who I am in a very quick way, so that my rights as a european citizen are respected.
This is a false issue, it works fairly well all over the world, and I believe the/. crowd shouldn't be wasting their time over some laughable conspiracy theory...
I live in a country where we can't afford to pay for most of the software, music or movies simply because they are sold at the same price as in the U.S. or wherever they are made. Why don't manufacturers scale the prices to each country's possibilities? This is certainly hard to do, but I refuse to buy if I can just download it from the net.
I'm aware of this concept for years. You should all read "A Deepness In The Sky" by Vernor Vinge, an excellent science-fiction book already reviewd by someone at Slashdot.
