  1. Re:linux for your average user? on Caldera Graphic Installation Screenshots · · Score: 1

I can't help but feel that your way off. If a company, such as Caldera, could make a distrobution that was reasonably simple to install. Had a GUI interface that allowed for a default set of packages that were of a high probability to work on the first boot-up. The average user would need nothing more than what is available for Linux right now. The newest version of Netscape is at least as stable as IE xx, Star Office or Wordperfect for all your text editing needs, KICQ for online paging, BitchX or Kvirc for internet chatting and X11amp for mp3's. What else does the average user need? I can not understand how some worry that a single distribution with a graphical install is going to taint the entire Linux community so they are never offered a custom install or the ability to do any CLI. I only see that getting more users to Linux makes it more viable for companies to port there software to Linux, which helps us all; not to mention the need for a larger base of hardware support which would come if those same companies felt Linux had a customer base large enough to warrant it. Just my two pennies.
