I for one am rooting for AMD. Here is a company that took on an industry standard and set out to beat Big Brother at his own game. AMD's chip is benched marked faster; a true revolutionary as far as the clock speed specs. are concerned. Although I must admit when the i820 boards come into circulation, AMD better have a trick up their peverbial sleeve. There can be only one.
Interesting article that reveals the ugliness of the tech market. Nowadays people are so consumed with the quick easy money of earning an MCSE degree that no one takes time to stop and look at the reality of an over saturated market. The world doesn't need another Devry drop out who is out to make a fast buck, no the world needs people who eat and sleep computers who adjust as needed. Sure the market is due to crumble in the next coming years for computer pros but the ones left standing will be those who started with computers as a hobby and not a job.
In the 60s the engineer ruled now its the Nt admin, let us just hope that the next trend won't be the Red Hat certified professional in a box.
This article touches base on so many aspects that it is disturbing. Speak to any engineer turned computer hack or programmer, and if he or she tells you different they won't survive the next economic flux.
I'm actually in the same boat as you. I am going back to school in the Spring to pursue a graduate degree in Computer Science. I just recently got my EE degree but my computer alterego seems to be more than I can handle. In regards to your inquiry, everyone wants to go to MIT or Caltech but what you really should be asking is will this help me in the job market; a subject I get mixed replies about. I've read that companies want young, brilliant miracle workers they can mold into commercial drones who will preach the Microsoft pragma. Others say the more education the better which will allow you to start out in a Technical Lead position. If being practical is not in the cards for you disregard this comment.
I'm really tired of all the bad mouthing of the voodoo 3. The voodoo 3 with a AMD K6 266 gave me great performance at a great price. I do have to sympathize with some people in that the linux drivers for 2d support kinda suck, but if 3dfx is really serious about selling the voodoo card chain to the linux consumer than they should focus on producing Xservers that have higher bit depth and high res to match the card's benchmarks.
I for one believe that tampering with the beauty and order of nature is foolhearty and all for the sake of deeming ourselves as gods. It's almost as foolish as genetic cloning. Even without the formation of stranglets or miniture black holes, generating strange subatomic particles that can alter matter is no child's play. Beware of the Manhattan project part deux.
Wow with Lucent's new advancements in Wireless bandwidth and advances in wearable wireless hardware the new century will bring new life to wireless. I guess it's a matter of time before we as humans will walk the earth much like the borg with Intel's internet tracking as our personal Borg signature.
