  4. donating to sco? on SCO Lobbying Congress Against Open Code · · Score: 0

Hi, Since this is the most recent SCO thread I thought I'd ask this in here since someone might now. I'd like to show my support of what SCO is doing, so does anyone know how I might go about donating some money to SCO? I can't see anything on their website about accepting donations & I'm pretty sure they don't have a paypal account! Is there another channel I should take? Thanks.

  6. welcome to the real world. on Microsoft to Buy Vivendi Games Division? · · Score: -1, Troll

You made some good points Mr. Crate. Yours appears to be the only rational post in this whole thread.

This is a fact of buisness: Companies with money acquire companies with no money (or in Vivendi's case, $18bn of debt.). If it was say... Sega buying vivendi (They were interested in buying too, but I didn't see a post on Slashdot about that...), would so many people be reacting like this? probably not. But since it's micro$$$$$oft, everyone has to get their knickers in a twist over it and point out how Half Life 2 (Which Gabe Newall has been talking to Microsoft about for several months, before any of this Videndi stuff happened) and Starcraft 2 (Because we all know how astoundingly good RTS games are on consoles!! Starcraft 64 anyone?) are going to be xbox exclusives... despite both companies already activley developing xbox games (Valve: Counterstrike games & possibly HL2. Sierra: SC: Ghost).

There really is a huge double standard here for a reason that escapes me but is clearly not based in common sense or fact. Was there this much of an uproar when Nintendo bought 49% of Rare's shares, or when they made Silicon Knights a second party? or when Sony gave Rockstar a large bag full of money to secure GTA exclusivity? you can bet there fucking well wasn't. They're all equally money-grabbing and greedy multinational corporations that have given large amounts of money to studios in the past in order to further their own consoles... so you should hate them all equally and proclaim it the death of gaming each time it happens, right? Well, no... because this is how the gaming industry works.

Of course all of this is assumption - we assume this is going to happen, because none of this has been confirmed - although it has looked likely for some time. Vivendi have been trying to offload assets for some time - there's no micro$$$$0ft hostaeiel taekovar conspiraceryy going on here, Vivendi actively wants rid of their assets and have been seeking buyers for some time.

Seriously... it isn't the end of the world. One massive company is (probably) buying parts of another. More than likely it won't affect much with the development teams we're talking about here. For example - I recall Blizzard have a clause in their contract saying that they can pretty much do whatever the hell they like, and they can't be pushed around by whoever owns them (It's entirely possible that Valve have the same thing). That said, it really scares me how so many people have deluded themselves into thinking this is the end of the PC gaming industry - Blizzard and Sierra don't comprise 100% of the PC gaming industry but doomsday-predictions when it comes to Microsoft tend to be Slashdot's forte.

Oh, one last thing - on behalf of my friends and I, can you people stop using the "in soviet russia..." meme? it stopped being funny several months ago. Now I'm going to get a drink and watch my post get modded -1, Troll by some sycophant on Lynx.
