There are many other options indeed... unfortunately open source doesn't work for everyone. Setting up Moodle with e-commerce is next to impossible.
My software company Savvica provides a compelling alternative. For individual users, check out Nuvvo. E-commerce is very gracefully integrated in both.
I'd love to hear what everyone thinks of our solutions, if you have a moment.
The Register has a news section on enterprise computing. I wouldn't say that's all you'd ever need to read, but its a start.

iTunes will surely be bundled with the iPods. But they can still make money by distributing it freely with the iTunes Music Store. Songs ($.99) and albums ($9.99). iTunes is now more than a simple player, but a mechanism to buy music as well.
There is so much conflict of interest inside Sony right now... and its really held back Sony's electronics division, specifically its walkman/mp3 players which are all crippled by copyright protection mechanisms.
Does Apple really want to get itself in the same situation? I feel that Apple's relative unemcubrance is what allow it to dethrown Sony as the maker of the coolest portable music device you can buy.
This is a great innovation. I have two computers on my desk, and am always cutting text in one and then mistakingly trying to paste it on the other machine. The one change I would make to this cool little utility is that I would like to have only one clipboard ever, shared between many computers, so when I cut text on one machine it updates all the clipboards.
this would be the opposite of multiple clipboards, which I've always hated.
anyone know of any efforts to get rendezvous on other OSes?
Hehe.
Seriously though, perhaps this new take on meeting others online will yield better results: Pursudo.
I just launched this week.

Rendezvous is indeed based on Zeroconf.

but my question remains unanswered... is there a Zeroconf implementation on non-mac platfoforms?
