Yep you can run them both from the same hard drive.
Making it dual boot is just like making Linux dual boot with Windows... ok a little harder but it's not too bad. But in all honesty I wouldn't bother. I installed Debian about a month ago... haven't booted Red Hat since, and I'm just about to reclaim the drive space:)
