They really should. I signed up for my student account in the middle of Sept. so that I would get the Panther update for free and be able to use the generous hardware discount when the rev. B G5's come out. It's only $99 and the free Panther disc alone pays for it not to speak of all the cool little crap they throw in, like mailing developers cd's to me and a free shirt, etc. I think that anyone that is enrolled in a school should give it a look.
If you're running an oracle database then you shouldn't be worried about the size lost due to formatting pushing your storage cost from $0.90/gig to $1.05/gig. That's a whole nother ballpark. These guys seem to be people building, or buying, pc's for personal use. Most of them have no need for a database or would run MySQL or something like that if they did. There are always considerations that a small part of the greater group have to consider but they tend to not way very heavily on the broader discussion. Good point though.
It has to be formatted. That's just how it is. You wouldn't get much use out of a hard drive without a filesystem on it. Suing them isn't really going to help much. Even if the lawsuit goes to court and they win, which they really shouldn't, then there will be weird numbers on ads like "now with a 73.45 GB hard drive". People just need to realize that they're gonna lose ~ 10% to formatting. It's like the halfs of penny's that are rounded down. Oh, maybe we could write a program to gather all the lost gigs and use them to.....store stuff......
I attend Bethel College in Minnesota and we have a small but highly regarded physics program. Several of my freinds are doing 3/2's at the University of Minnesota, I am a CS major, and they report that even with a slanted grading scale, in electronics I believe that the A range went down to 65, many hold a GPA in the 3.0 range. To put this in perspective though the U of M gaurantees admission into any of the engineering programs there if you have > 2.5. What does that say about grades? And how many of these guys/girls go civil engineer and build bridges????
I think your equating two different things. The "rebel alliance" comment doesn't have to be construed as a statement of superiority. It could easily be seen as them fighting the reigning superpower, M$, which they are. There is a big difference between striving, as the underdog, to put out a decent product and holding ignorant, grade school attitudes. You seem pretty quick to get huffy about the post, why the resentment?
