  1. ffmpeg and logitech web cams on High Tech Baby Monitoring? · · Score: 1

I setup a Linux box with a couple of inexpensive Netcams from http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details /US/EN,CRID=4,CONTENTID=5042. I use ffmpeg http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php to capture the data and provide streams for ffserver.
I then can watch my monkeys playing all day from Windows Media player at work. By the way, I have firewall rules that only allow access to me and other family members. This isn't to watch a baby sitter as much as it is to be a part of the lives of my children. I wish we all didn't have to work and could stay with our children full time. But we can't. Video and audio during the day on breaks is good for me.

  2. Just like 900mhz home phones... on Plain Cell Phones Fading Away? · · Score: 1

I find it frustrating to say the least that the manufactures want to push gadgets and the latest technology just to make more money. I use 900mhz phones in my house, this keeps my 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz range open for networks and baby cameras. But you won't find that good of selection of these 900mhz phones available anymore. So, I get the 900mhz range all to myself. I have the same problem with Cell phones. I just changed to T-Moble and the representative asked me, "What features would you like on your phone?". My response of course was, "I would like it to make phone calls very well, thank you!." I also like to sync my calendar and contacts but I feel that is a bonus to good phone service.

  4. Keep your team in focus on Organizing Your Web Services Division? · · Score: 1

At my company we have a large online content services group. They are responsible for the development of the content as well as publishing it. The leader of the content group is at the same level as other IT groups. The content group however has no control over the servers themselves. The servers are controled by the systems administrators as they should be. Just as the content group maintains the content and makes the rules up for how things will look and flow, the sys-admins control the systems updates and change controls used on the servers. This works well for us, because our teams work together to make things happen. Content publishing is a part of IT. If you can't get results by having your teams work together, you have other political problems that won't go away very easy. I used to work for a local goverment and I would bet the later of here is true. Sorry but there isn't any way around those dang politics.

  5. www.pcs.k12.va.us on Wanted - 45 Mile Wireless Broadband? · · Score: 2, Informative

I helped setup the wireless system for this school a couple years ago. We used BreezeCom and Tsunami equipment. They have done much more since then. At 45 miles though you will have deal with the curvature of the earth. All wireless/microwave systems require line of site.
We setup relay stations for the sites we couldn't reach by one line of site path. The director of IT at the above mentioned school has a great deal of knowledge in this area. I'm sure he would not mind sharing that information. Good Luck!

  6. The key is Adults have to be responsible on Elizabeth Dole Calls for Library Net Filtering · · Score: 1

As an administrator of a system that "censors" information from the internet in a "Public" k-12 school I can tell you that some sort of regulation has to be in place or ELSE! Parents will sue in a heart beat. Libraries are in the same boat. Lets face it, in an enviroment that or people waiting to find somthing to sue over we have to do what we can. We do not block "educational" stuff and if something is blocked and there is a question as to why or if it should be then a Parent/Teacher counsel decides. Siding on the conservative side dosn't hurt anyones education or research. People researched for years before the internet was here.
