OK, the first thing is that they released their outrageous priced processor to compete with Intel's Extreme edition of the Pentium. They knew it was outrageous, they just wanted to be competitive in all aspects of the market.

On the other hand, your question about having the memory processor directly on the processor. It is the best idea ever, and you may not understand this, being a desktop user, but being in IT when I was young, and now in the money end of IS, I understand the value of the system amd is implementing, for instance sometimes I would purchase a quad Xeon system but it irritated me to do so, because I knew that because of the bottleneck to the memmory, my fourth processor was almost worthless. But with the memory controller on the proc, you amazingly reduce latency, and every time you add another processor you add more memory bandwidth, as apposed to each processor having to share a limited amount of memmory bandwidth on the board.

AMD is on track for the future, even though it seems they are not doing what's best for your current desktop needs.

Also post why are you comparing a single processor system to a dual processor system. You know G5 didn't invent the dual CPU market, their are lots of MOBOs for dual Athlons, as a matter of fact the Athlon MP was designed to be run dual.

I don't compare my dell single proc server, to my IBM quad Xeon, cause that would be dumb. Oh, and on your G5 can you play medal of honor, or half life 2 when it comes out?

I run an apple G5 here at work, and it doesn't seem faster than the dual athlon MP system I built. Which after seeing the bill for the G5, I could have nearly built two dual athlon machines.

removing the plates is not always a good idea, the point of having them blocked is actually to increase air flow past the items needed. If you remove those plates then the air will rush out past your cards as apposed to passing your processor. anywhere their is a whole in your case their should be a fan pushing or pulling. This is more important than just letting lots of area for air to enter or leave your case. For instance, blow air through a straw and that air moves very quicly through the straw, now cut slits in the straw and feel it. Air won't move as quickly, in fact the extra opening will create eddies, and blow back. I hope I am displaying this idea clearly. Put those plates back in cause your just making your computer ugly, not increasing air movement.

TCO is a total cost number, meaning, overall microsoft is cheaper. Also your making the assumption that linux is safer, or somehow more secure for data than Microsoft Server software. This isn't necessarilly true. Using the idea that Microsoft gets hit by viruses and Linux doesn't is really more a matter of Microsoft representing 95% of the desktop market and therefor 95% of the virus makers are coding to affect Microsoft. Server 2003 is an excellent product, quick and reliable. Also very easy to use and maintain. I have no complaints at all. It takes a minute to boot, but once it does, the OS only occupies about 1% of my processor usage, which isn't bad. These are independant partial studies, believe what you like, but it's in black and white, Microsofts TCO is cheaper, and if redhat had a study proving otherwise, don't you think we would have seen it by now.
