Sometimes it's a user error they don''t want to admit, and so they won't reproduce it in front of somebody who knows they should not have done that.

Sometimes it's just a glitch. Regardless, the best thing to do is smile and say "The bug must be afraid of me" and close the ticket.

Bonuses should not be "expected". That defeats the point. You don't do that sort of thing if you want to be happy in life. Your deal is that you work and they pay you the agreed amount. When you get your bonus, be happy. When times are hard and you don't get a bonus but the company doesn't go under man up and be happy about the wisdom of your employer, unless he happened to pay himself a $5K/employee Christmas bonus at the same time.

Twitter is the zealot I was once. He's coming to a more moderate stance gradually, as is proper. In the mean time he gives an outer bound to the acceptable scope of zeal. In the process he is instructive, informative, and useful. He finds links the less motivated would overlook, and he manages to get them posted to the main page. If it were not for him we would not know about a lot of really negative stuff. Twitter is useful even in his foolishness. We owe him a lot even if we don't accept his M$ usages. More importantly, he has the time to seek out references and offences that I do not.

  22. In Flint, Michigan on Computer Models and the Global Economic Crash · · Score: 1

In Flint, Michigan supply is definitely in excess of demand. In real estate, prices do not always go up. It's reasonable to expect that this duplex was once worth more than the current $4500 price it's offered at. It's a shame I don't have enough cash to invest in Michigan real estate. It seems certain they'll find a use for the state someday. By that, don't take it that I would live there. I wouldn't, even if homes were free.

It's sad that people in Michigan are still renting. A 30 year mortgage on $5k is $28.00,/mo if you can find a lender that will mortgage that little. Renting in that situation is just dumb - a week's work at minimum wage is enough to pay your mortgage for more than a year.

Foreign folks pay much more than $5k just to come here. To come here, have a home and a spare they can rent out for more than their mortgage costs is a gift. We're due for a huge influx of immigrants.

Some of the people who come to the US don't do it for the opportunity - they do it because the situation in their home country is really really bad. I feel for them. Some of them are my friends. I wouldn't wish on them the economic conditions of Flint, MI, but in reality it's better than not coming here at all.

When we talk about how bad things are here, we need to keep an eye to the context of how the rest of the world is doing.

    3x nothing is still nothing.

The corrections I propose don't disadvantage the GNU and other copyleft licenses. If anything, they bring them up to the level of the other licenses. There remains the potential for injunctions against violators to prevent commercial infringement.

BTW, "copyleft" means "make a copy, as long as there's a copy left." Much of my output is licensed this way, with "all rights reversed".

Copyright and patent are a large part of what's preventing progress in the IT realm. The purpose of copyright and patent are "To promote progress in science and the useful arts". We should now acknowledge that the laws in place do prevent, rather than promote, progress. Progress is the goal. Progress is essential. The laws that prevent progress must be repealed.

Although your idea is a good step too.

  25. Single system image on Hardware Is Cheap, Programmers Are Expensive · · Score: 1

There's an economy of scale in deployments. Every extra system image requires a ton of development and deployment time, troubleshooting and repair become more problematic and expensive, and these costs rise exponentially with the number of variant systems. This is why OEMs offer "long term support" product lines that are guaranteed to be image compatible with each other over a span of 7-8 years.

In short, your salary isn't the only factor here. One way to leverage extra money for more expensive staff is to give them larger, higher resolution monitors and/or multiple monitors, memory upgrades, or other enhancements that don't alter the system image. This allows them to get more work done more than just having a faster PC would without incurring the extra expense that having a bunch of different types of computer would.
