Since the main engines are only used during take off, that is very unlikely. Even while manuvering in space they use a reaction control system which is still a seperate system.
Since they lost sensors in the left wing assembly which progressivly got worse to the point of catastrophic, my uneducated guess would be heat shielding failure in that wing.
Regardless of the reason, may those seven astronauts rest in peace and hearts are with their families.
