Unfortunately, last time I saw the trailer, the movie looked horrible. In fact, I can remember telling my friend that "this looks like a bad ripoff of the WoD, its too bad Whitewolf never got off their ass and made a proper WoD movie." So Whitewolf, how bout you get the money from this, and then make your own movie which you own the rights to. Personally, I think it could be a lot cooler than just vampire vs werewolf. Fans of the WoD will recall that there are many denizens there, including mages, changelings, wraiths, etc. And additionally, I'd love to see werewolves portrayed as the good protectors of the earth.
While I think something like this may be useful if it defaulted to opt-in with ability to opt-out, I am scared of the possibility of a slippery slope.
Sure this starts out helping the net in general and preventing everything from going to hell when the next virus comes out.....but what if the RIAA after some successful lawmaking decides that whatever ports Kazaa is running on are bad/illegal and must be blocked? Or what if program X runs on port Y and whatever group doesn't like it decides to block it? Obviously there are other ways around it....but not everybody knows those. Maybe I'm just being paranoid....but with some of the things that have happened lately, who's to say.
"On the other hand, I did do a little graffiti 'tagging', and some petty acts of vandalism, in spite of not having any games which even had vandalism in them."
You lie! You OBVIOUSLY played Jet Set Radio Future and were inspired by it to deface property. The makers of that game should be sued! As well as anybody who makes spray paint. Those horrible horrible people, how could they support something like that.
I know this kid doesn't have the confidence and self-esteem to run around going "yeah, i'm the starwars kid, and i'm/was the biggest thing on the net, what have you done lately. Perhaps though, if he did, he could have the time and enthusiasm to finish whatever movie he wanted to make, get people to help with it, get it distributed all over the net, and perhaps, JUST MAYBE, beg George Lucas to get it to play at the beginning or end of the movie. Who knows, it would probably be better than the real movie anyways.
" It would be, and probably only should be, a short cameo appearance, maybe as a young jedi in training."
Perhaps of him flailing around with a double ended lightsaber and crashing into the walls like he does in his video! If he makes it in, I give him 1 week until its clipped, remixed, and put on the web all over again.
"As for the pedophiles... well, I guess a bullet in the head will 'cure' their sick lusts..."
I'm not defending pedophiles who act on their desires, but to suggest that someone with a mental disorder be shot in the head just because of their disorder is plain wrong. How would you like it if you were OCD and someone wanted to shoot you in the head because of it? Pedophilia isn't something you practice and become, its something you're born with or develop as a result of psychological trauma.
"This is an intresting statement. While true, for how long? We know that the RIAA (or an oursourced company) is interjecting junk mp3's into the system now, whats to stop them from retagging porn with mp3 headers to make their point?"
So when I go to open the pr0n-labeled-as-mp3 in Winamp...its broken, I delete it, and try to download from another source. I seriously doubt how anybody would think....HEY, this must be a movie renamed as an mp3!
"Let's be serious. How often does this happen. I've been downloading contents from peer to peer networks since the advent of scour.net, and have had no gross misrepresentations of content such as you imply happen. The worst I've ever seen is badly labelled pornography (which was still clearly labelled as pornography). I maintain that this kind of misrepresentation happens on such an infrequent basis as to assume it to be insignificant."
Actually, its happened to me a couple times, with fairly big name movies. The first time was a week before Harry Potter came out, and it was popping up online. I got a copy that was porn, and I couldn't help but imagine little Timmy sitting at home going "mommy mommy! look, I got the new Harry Pot...........omg....mommy, why is he poking her with that big finger?" The other time was for another movie I forget the name of, and it turned out to be Snoop Dogs Doggystyle. Just because it hasn't happened to you does not mean it doesn't happen, nor does it mean its not common.
"If I put all of my personal files on a wireless hard drive I carried around with me, I would always be worried about people around me trying to hack in."
You know, while you make a point....I think it lacks the bigger picture. Of COURSE you're at risk from the people around you. But you're at a much bigger risk when you're on the net at home/office. There its not just the people immediately around you that can try to hack your server, its EVERYBODY ON THE NET!
I personally would much rather be at risk from the people around me. Then at least if I had an idea who was trying to get in, I could chase them down and beat them, or move to a private area and out of their range.
Also, having unsecured computers doesn't stop the vast majority of people from going online, so why should it stop this? Those who can protect their computers will, those who don't know how will suffer the consequences.
" Look, Bluetooth has about a 10 meter (10 yard) radius if you can't keep intruders out of your house or the cubes right next to you, you have more important worries than your PAN server security"
What you fail to realize though is that 10 meters is a sizeable distance. Its not just the people in the cubicles nearby or your house. What if you live in an apartment building. I don't know how Bluetooth handles through floors and ceilings, but that could be a potential issue. Or what if you're on the bus? Or walking down the street?
So yes, you may have bigger problems if you can't keep people out of your house, or trust your coworkers, but what about everybody else in the world who you might use this near?
"# stay at home on friday nights to watch it.
# spend the ENTIRE night watching FOX on mute absentmindedly (while killing time on the net) until it came on at 12:05am to then stay up until 1:05am to watch it."
I know this is a silly suggestion given this is Slashdot....but couldn't you have gone out and done something until it came on? Or is this just another way of showing your devotion to Firefly. This was a joke chillout.
"The first 30 seconds were pretty cool but then it changed to this crappy static noise beat thing with high pitched squeals. Boy that song sucked!"
Out of curiosity, does anybody know the company/s responsible for this annoying thing? Granted, it makes it harder for me to find a new radio song I want on Kazaalite.....but I just jump over to a lesser known P2P app where you have to know somethin about computers to use it, and I find the quality of files there is much better.
"You know, you don't have to buy the collector's/special editions of games/movies/whatever. No one's forcing you. The whole point of a special edition/limited edition is offering things the standard version doesn't have!"
And what about when the standard version has things the special version doesn't have? There's been a trend lately *cough*LOTR*cough* where there are certain deleted scenes on the standard one, and different ones on the special edition. The push then is that if you are a TRUE collector.....you'll buy both. Now, I'm all for the basic standard/special edition thing, thats cool, gives people an option. But this is just scummy.
Its a somewhat interesting question.....but come on....this isn't news....this is posting to slashdot a brief thread from some messageboard. I'm not trying to troll here, but I'm just saying, there's FIVE FRIGGIN POSTS IN THE THREAD. Is that news? Gaw...o well, got karma to burn if the mods are feeling vindictive tonight.
" This is hilarious. I'd like to see how the RIAA spins this."
More importantly, I'd like to see Apple's reaction to this. It is THEIR service that is being used to facilitate the initial purchase of the song. Apple needs to maintain a very good relationship with the labels right now. If the labels start breathing down Apple's neck about it....which do you think is more likely....that Steve Jobs will smack them down with his reality distortion field and this will be legal? Or that Apple would put some clause in the user agreement forbidding this kind of thing. I predict the latter, although stranger things have been known to happen.

And you have no sense of humor, congratulations o' great anonymous one.

Anybody else listen to that and go "HEY! That sounds like seagulls!"

Hopefully that suing your customers is BAD.
