The universe has been around for a long time, and when rocks aren't hitting each other, they're slowly burning out or violently exploding. You think putting some mines on the moon is going to ruin its ecosystem?
I'd rather see us mining from somewhere that's not going to miss the material than from the proposed dig site 10 miles from my house.
The only real question is whether the moon has enough material of value to mine...
