  3. Tracking shutting down on Intel's Sandy Bridge Processor Has a Kill Switch · · Score: 1

So, you can remotely disable a system that has been stolen. This will mean criminals of opportunity will just throw the device away (and you'll never get it back) or criminals with intent to steal your data will just yank the drive.

Better solution? Discreet tracking. Keep an eye on the system and track where it goes so you can recover it when you're ready.

As for all the controversy around this, how is it any different to what Apple do with its beloved iPhone?

  4. I've tried it... on Is Vista the New OS/2? · · Score: 5, Interesting

As a Technet subscriber I've had access to Vista for a while now. I've loaded it onto my PC, I've tried it out, and I personally won't be switching. Microsoft's stubborn belief that they know how I want to use my computer - not the other way around - has meant that I'll now sit down and spend the time to get an installation of an alternative OS working. Hopefully that means I won't have to use it at all, right?

    Wrong.

Unfortunately however (and I'm sure many of you have already witnessed this) I work in a rather large org (Government, in fact) which is dominated by those who say "new is better", and are already putting into action plans to upgrade our fleets of PCs to Vista.

No matter what comparisons people make to OS' of past, Vista is here to stay. Why? Because it's a Microsoft product. And 'The Big People' want Microsoft products, whatever it means.

Maybe that'll change in five or ten years, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Can the Mp3 player turn itself off by making it play a soundtrack saying, "Shut down"?

You're not the first smart alec to ask this. ;) No, it likely can't. Why? Because voice recognition absolutely sucks for noisy environments - ie, a car where there's music playing.

It probably won't be able to understand you, let alone the music...

Sure, I've heard of them. Perhaps I should've made myself clearer in my first post. I wasn't specifically talking about all devices, only certain ones. For example, a mouse doesn't need that transfer rate. Nor a keyboard. Yes, storage devices certainly need it, but other devices don't.

I know my printer doesn't need it either.
