It's a "Web filtering" application. Of course there's "good" uses for a product like this, depending on your point of view. A company's IT department might want to block out things like Hotmail and Gmail to prevent people from using company time to write personal emails (or browsing slashdot on company time... whoops!). A library/school might want to block out adult sites. Unfortunately, there are plenty of wonderful censorship uses for said software as well.

Have they at least fixed the problem where if you use Windows FF in a "one window" mode (tabbed browsing, all new windows in new tabs instead) and leave it open for a couple days, the memory never seems to get released? That's my only real quibble with Firefox (and it doesn't prevent me from using it, I just have to shut down FFox every morning when I get to work and restart it). It's kinda concerning to have one tab open, look into process explorer and see the FF is using 180mb of RAM.

Actually, I know at least a couple of the dvd playing software packages do NOT allow you to ignore region coding. In Canada this is already the case. There is a tariff on blank digital media, that goes to paying artists for stuff that has been copied onto it. And there's no way to say "I am only using this for backup purposes, please take off the tariff". In fact, our laws are 31 different flavours of confusing on the subject - the last consensus I heard was that it is almost certainly legal to download music off the net, but not legal to share it with anyone else. It falls under the "personal copying" side of things, in theory.
