If you really want to see what's out there (and running your banks, hospitals, etc) check out The Daily WTF. There's a whole section dedicated to WTF code.
I'll give a counter point of when it works well. I don't particularly like my body (Rugby Player) and in the last year I've torn 2 ACLs and 1 UCL along with partially separated my SC joint. I've come to know my Orthopods very well.
EVERYTHING in their facility digital. Digital X-Rays (IMHO) are amazing. No more days of "Oh this one didn't turn out, go back for another set" The techs are pretty well trained and when the image pops up on their screen they know instantly if they need to redo it. The files are then tossed in some magical cloud. When I go to the visiting room with the Doc there's a computer that he uses to pull up my record and it has all my images (MRI and X-Ray) and you can scroll through them instantly. No more huge white boards. You could scroll through the layers of MRIs with the scroll wheel (pretty cool to me)
The surgery center, again everything is digital. All of the release forms are on tablet PCs. There's a large screen TV in the lobby with a secret PIN along with my status. The PIN was given to my ride. It would be updated instantly with Pre-Op, Op, Post Op 1, Post Op 2, Released.
There is a standard format for images: DICOM. When I had my last ACL done I was given a CD with all these.dcm images. On my Mac there is a free (as in beer) viewer OsirX. Searching SourceForge there are other free viewers out there.
Probably in cases of fraud. We've all seen the CSI/L&O/NYPDB where some poor widow has $1M in health care charges and magically pays it off after some alleged wrong doing with some kingpin.
And then you have to run some stupid java downloader on OS X. I just want a fucking link to the ISO. Way to go Microsoft, once again make it easier for me to just 'pirate' it.
There's already a website that aggregates this information. http://www.123people.com/. A friend showed it to me the other day and It's pretty good in what it picks up, since most of them don't even show up on google top 50 together. There were 1 or 2 pieces of information that were off, but these were obvious.
For people that had more of a web presence it picked up quite a bit more, even photos tagged of them from other people's photobucket and such.
Obviously the more unique the name, the better the results too.
Toss a lid on it. Nothing will evaporate, it works well for ICE coolant systems. Toss a bubbler at the bottom to bubble air through the system so the algae can get air. You solve 2 problems, first is the evaporation. Second is that in a big swimming pool the only algae in contact with air is the stuff on the surface. If you bubble it through you can get air to a much larger percentage of the algae.
Which is why we need to start building light and fast rail NOW. Link all the cities above X million people, a hub in cities with more than X0 million people. Rail doesn't need to carry ANY energy. (Overhead power lines), rail can do regenerative braking and dump all that power back into the grid, power generation can be centralized and cleaned (rather than a million little diesel engines running around).
You could even get rid of photobucket or craigs list.
If I was a real deal terrorist I'd start putting messages in images. "For sale: " each with a different message, all embedded with text or encrypted text.
I posted the numbers in another reply. I make about twice as much as my parents do NOW. As in 2008 dollars. I'm just going on the assumption that their salaries have been adjusted by inflation.
I'm hoping not to work until I'm 65. If I make my pile of gold big enough now (When I'm young, single and can put in 50 hours a week) then hopefully when I have kids I could either quit early or go to part time.
The gym's shower is there for showering after working out. I shower after I work out. How is that not the intended purpose?
My car is in perfectly good shape. Quite a few people have recorded 300-400k on their TDIs, it's a durable little engine.
Second hand is goodwill. I need to wear business casual to work, so I shop at goodwill for business casual. Nothing is even close to being worn out and a fraction of what it costs at Kohls.
And the other thing I'm 'spending' my money on that makes up the rest is a savings account.
Government subsidized housing is not "cheapie" rent, it's the projects and ghetto around here. And no I wasn't stupid enough to get an ARM. 45 is as low as my house goes and plus any lower and you risk pipes bursting.
And yes, I do cut my soup at work with tap water. Usually add a bit of extra spices to add some flavor and cut it with water from work.
My parents currently make $42k. I currently make $78k. Assuming their jobs were adjusted for inflation they only made quite a bit less when I was born.
I'm socking away money left and right while kids that I went to college with go out and buy big TVs and new cars. My house is set at 45 degrees. I've shut off my hot water heater and shower at the gym (Which costs me less than what running the heater would cost, plus I work out there too). My car is 12 years old and has 220k on it (but still runs fine). Growing up my dad would get 1-2 years out of a $500 car and get another one. I buy almost everything second hand, including clothes.
I do have some 'nice' things like the internet and my MacBook Pro and a house a bit nicer than my parents. But it's frustrating to no end to drive past the subsidized housing on the way to work and see nicer cars than me. People crossing the street on iPhones and wearing brand new clothes. People that bitch they have no money but have plenty of money for 2 packs a day. Some people need to be taught the difference between Want and Need.
And my company has never had an engineering layoff in the entire 85+ year history of the company. I think I'm doing pretty good.
Because if you are unemployed you shouldn't have the internet. If you can't afford the Gas to drive to the unemployment office. You take bus or the subway or you get off your lazy ass and walk or bike. When I was poor I went to the library. I couldn't afford the $40/month for internet.
Nothing is more disgusting than watching Best Buy drop off a Plasma screen TV to Government subsidized housing and I know full well they all have the $150/month HDTV Cable plan.
My parents raised 4 kids on about half of what I make now (and no, inflation doesn't come close to counting for the difference, Born in '82). I hope we hit another depression. Grandma and Grandpa knew how to live frugally. Before she passed away I had the opportunity to talk to my grandma about the great depression and what life was really like.
Frugal is not having the internet. It is not having to downgrade to the basic cable or even have a TV. It is not having $90/month Cell phone plans.
When these people have to start cutting their flour with cardboard to make it last longer, call me.
Monday is a Whacking Day. Tuesday is a Finger Day. Wednesday is an AAAAH Day. Thursday is a drinking day. Friday is a Fucking Day. SATURDAY IS A RUGBY DAY.
I own the CSI-STATION1A which is $40. Replaceable tips. I got a needle point and a broad one and I use it at least once a month for the last year. I probably wouldn't have a problem using it 24/7. Much cheaper than weller and higher quality the cheap knockoffs. I find I get up to temp VERY quickly and it's just an all around solid product.
Just because it isn't easily replaceable (as cell phones are) doesn't mean it's hard. I've changed the battery on numerous iPods. I bet if you google for "Tungsten battery replacement" you'll find your solution.
Being able to fix SMTs makes me a bit of money on the side. People are seriously scared of them. It's not that hard with a good soldering iron. I use Wellers at work but I bought a very nice base station model for around $40.
If it's a common problem a quick google will show sites like Make that have the parts and such that you need to fix common stuff. There are dozens of Washer, Drier, Dishwashers, etc DIY websites out there that show you how to do about anything you could want to do to them, including repairing mainboards.
The main competition to Windows Is Windows N-1.

Why that's allowed is beyond me but it is.
Probably in cases of fraud. We've all seen the CSI/L&O/NYPDB where some poor widow has $1M in health care charges and magically pays it off after some alleged wrong doing with some kingpin.
Planning to get rid of it... by putting it on the higher end laptops just released.
Firewire may be dead to the home consumer, but just like BetaMax, it's likely to live on in the pro-sumer and professional world.
And then you have to run some stupid java downloader on OS X. I just want a fucking link to the ISO. Way to go Microsoft, once again make it easier for me to just 'pirate' it.
And they're abit pretentious on their download form: "*Whatâ(TM)s the primary client operating system that you use today?"
*Vista
*XP
*Early Version of Windows
*Other
Sheesh, If I was in marketing I'd want to at least differentiate between Linux and Mac users wanting to try out Windows 7.

Indeed, I hear that the south west has LARGE tracts of land (those larger than NJ) that would much more ideal. Warm, Sunny, etc.

Bork Bork Bork Bork Bork!

I do in the summer. Unfortunately with no sidewalks and a lazy government, it's just not possible in the summer.
Plus, where would I shower?
I'm hoping not to work until I'm 65. If I make my pile of gold big enough now (When I'm young, single and can put in 50 hours a week) then hopefully when I have kids I could either quit early or go to part time.

According to this website.
CPI in 2008 is 211.08, in 1982 was 94.3.

I missed the part where those forums and your e-mail wouldn't work at the Library.

SATURDAY IS A RUGBY DAY.
(I bet the /. & Rugby union set is a small one.)
I own a Circuit Specialists soldering station:
