The joystick port of my MSX computer was no longer working, it always reported the fire button as being pressed. I opened the case, took some random resistor I had lying around and tried it at several placed on the motherboard until it worked again, soldered it, closed case, done. Never had any problem after that. I knew nothing about electronics at that time.
