  1. Switching is not for everyone. on Enterprise CTO Switches to Mac OS X · · Score: 1, Insightful

I think it's great that somebody is keeping an open mind about another OS besides Windows. It took me months to get my company to let me use a Mac. Then again, I'm a graphic designer. You know, right tools for the job, and so on...I'm the only guy in a nationwide company of 45,000 employees who is on a Mac, and our IT people don't seem to have a problem with it. I do have to use Outlook in Classic for email, and that bites.

I'm glad this guy thought about OS X, but I'm not sure he really needs it. I'm glad he's trying it, but some of us Mac folk don't want EVERYONE to make the switch. If they did, OS X would no longer be the cool, esoteric, artsy operating system that it is.

  2. What about the Latin section? on Lost Library Returns After 2000 Years · · Score: 4, Interesting

The Villa of the Papyri, located in ancient Herculaneum, and having been a Roman city is also thought to have a Latin section, still buried beneath the mud. Since Herculaneum was buried in mud, not ash like Pompeii, it is extremely difficult to dig the rest of the villa out. Not to mention that the foundations of buildings from the modern city of Ercolano probably impede the archaeologist's progress. As for letting the public in, I think that's great. I only hope they drained the pool of funky bacteria-infested swamp water below the entrance that has built up over the years.

  3. Turn it into a server! on Metech Offers to Recycle Your Mac · · Score: 2, Insightful

Probably one of the best uses for old Macs (if you are a Mac true believer) is to turn it into a web/FTP server. Outfit that sucker with a fast ethernet card, throw some Apache software on there and get a static IP address. Do anything besides throw it away! And who in their right mind would pay someone to recycle it? The cases alone are worth at least $30.00.

  4. Did anyone actually watch the show? on TechTV Screen Savers Host Tries "The Switch" · · Score: 5, Informative

After Patrick Norton spent his three months with the iBook, he gave a great review right on par with what a daily Windows user would say. He likes the machine, and the operating system. The only problem was stuff he couln't go cross-platform on. They use some Windows-only scheduling software at TechTV. He also mentioned the price of the machine being a little high, but also commented on what software was already installed as a way to visualize offsetting the price. They'll probably rerun it in a couple of weeks. Check it out.

  5. Re:No wonder it's stronger than ever. on Five Years Later, Newton Still Going Strong · · Score: 1

No kidding. You should've seen how many were being used at Macworld in January. I am still amazed at how good the handwriting recognition is compared to Palm, etc., and these machines are OLD! Way to go Apple! Always innovating!
