Gee, I have a photographer friend that was arrested just for taking pictures of buildings in downtown Minneapolis.

Best for your or your girlfriend to talk to someone in authority before you go poking around.

It is pricey, but the better alternative for a larger school. We were having daily support calls to SchoolMinder. We're running on W2k and have been pretty happy so far. Would be nice to start up an OpenSource alternative. There appear to be many projects on SourceForge but most are still just ideas or very limited in scope

Our school Heritage Christian Academy (heritageweb.org) has been using SchoolMinder for several years. It was nice but I think we've outgrown it. We're currently installing PowerSchool, an Apple product. Mail me off-list and I can get you more info. Yes, I thought about writing our own (with PHP and Postgres, no flames please), but the number of tables, queries, dialogs, reports etc was quickly growing to be beyond what one person could support. It's not as simple as some would think when you add in grading, attendance, transcripts, class scheduling... for 500 students.

We caught a hacker breaking (successfully) into our school network. Spent 2 days rebuilding things. Notified the FBI but their reply was that unless there was >$5000 damage, they wouldn't do anything. Get a firewall.

The result of hiring a lawyer may not be that you need to change the contract. Many states have laws limiting what may be included in a NDA or No compete agreement. As a result the "Anything you invent, anytime, anywhere" clause may not be binding.

...voters, without any insider privileges, can cast unlimited votes without being detected by any mechanisms within the voting terminal.

As an election judge for 15 years, I know of no machine that can, or that we want to do this. To do such requires that a ballot be uniquely identifiable. Not what you want in an election tabulator.

Catching multiple vote fraud is the responsibility of the Election Judges and we have multiple crosschecks and verifications to prevent this.

Sounds like some politician wants to buy machines from another company, maybe one who owes him/her some money...
