Probably the engines give only a percentage of their power or something.

My hotmail account is approximatly 5 years old and isn't upgraded yet.
It's also always full of crap, so I don't really care about it.
My gmx account on the other hand doesn't get spam and is free without invites and has 1GB of storage space.
I also don't get spam at that account for some reason. It also has a nice look and is easy to configure for offline use (not at all like hotmail). The only downer about it is that the site is only in german. But that's ok to me.
