Being a sophmore in college, I can remember my APCS class very well. And how utterly bored I was learning just about nothing.
As a student I'd be very interested in developing something I could actually use outside of class. A better idea than asking/. might be to poll your students, then take the idea that would be most challenging and using that.
However if you dont feel thats the best idea, heres yet another suggestion, its something we did in intro cs at high school (and was more complicated than anything I saw in the AP class). Make a simple cipher\decipher, and build it up more and more depending on wether or not the students are actually interested or not, if not you've taught them something new and you move on. If they are you can get into sooo much stuff!

It seems to me that if you are using bacteria in this manner expecting exact results time after time, you are going to get a big let down eventually. Lets say some other random bacteria gets into the case and attacks the bacteria in your chip. Or the culture fails to replicate the 942'th generation. Or it mutates and suddenly provides 2 free electrons instead of 1. There seems to me to be too many variables in this theoretical hardware to even warrant exploring it.

The idea of making a semi-distributed OS, at least in the gathering usage statistics seems like a great idea. It would help to reduce, if not eliminate bloating and may lead to some truly innovative ideas.
However with the recent (ongoing) problem of script-kiddies and general morons, the whole project statistics-wise could be foiled. Yet this is a problem for everything, so perhaps its not even something worth considering.
That will happen. Its not like you buy less food because you are given free samples at the grocery store. In fact you buy more of that because it was good.
Im saying theres little point in trying to re-work X. Time would be better spent making Y-Windows (or whatever), which does what you'd like X to do, but lacks the problems and is streamlined. For now I just dont bother using X at all.
Dont say "theres nothing else out there" and continue using X-windows forever. Develop something new. Im nothing speaking to anyone in particular here, but it doesnt make any sense. I dont believe anyone can honestly say that they have no problems with X-windows. Starting over seems like a much easier step than going through the maze of code and attempting to fix bugs and "features" that make it so bloated.
I was wondering about this myself. Im pretty sure this Optiplex on my desk would survive a 2 story plunge if I slammed it into a cabinet, especially if it didnt hit concrete. However while first reading the page I didnt notice that, good observation. Much like that old dateline thing where they made the ford explode to prove that it was unsafe, but used pyrotechnics to make it look spectacular. Well this is sort of the reverse of that... Ah well.
This is amazing. Simply amazing. I remember a study once of having people play doom opposite people playing lemmings and then measuring their anger levels afterwards (dont ask me how) and showing that doom lowered it. Catharsis works, let the kids shoot things up so they dont feel the need to do it in real life!
Does my ISP have any responsibility to log anything whatsoever? Not unless they explained they had were going to in the term of service agreement, or publically announced they would elsewhere.
However I would expect to minimally see logs of all failed logins to my account. And Ideally every action on every port should be logged and archived. However this is not an ideal world and I'll settle with whatever information directly pertains to my account and data.
Normally im anti-troll but I'm all about Ninjas. Have you ever stormed a ninja stronghold? I didnt think so. Ninjas should definitely be consulted on all security issues.

This is the impression I get of the majority of linux users in every context. Badgering already busy people leads to those people ignoring you and your cause.
To respond to the inevitable pro-linux flames: "Yes companies should have feedback on what their users think. Its the overabundance thats a problem" "Not every company wants to devote the time an energy to a non standard os, yes linux is non standard. I dont have any figures to support this but im willing to wager that there are more windows\mac users than there are linux users, so devoting the time and energy to linux porting if its not going to yield a profit"
What is the reference to the "free pc" from the company then? I -did- read the article. Are you one of the computer users that feels "powerful and excited" when using a computer?
Look at this. You are using your companys property and storing stuff on there. And if you were doing something debilitating to the company and they found out, your loss, either play by the rules or be ready to get burned.
Hooray. Competition breeds better products for the end user and everyone is happy. Dont pick one company as better than the other, or one will die out and so will competition.
If this contest ended the 4th of feburary, why post about it now? Why not post "SuSE had a contest to name the lizard, results will be posted as they are recieved" not "Try to name the SuSE lizard".
Why in the world would I be going to college if I didn't have a fast connection? Its the only thing keeping me here, im sure not learning anything as a freshmen!
Oh wait. Yes it did. This has been ongoing for at least a week, why is it now suddenly /. worthy?
Maybe if you dont mind working for a franchise built on recycled flesh you barbarian!

The current "top of the line" SGI spec wise?
Also for all those saying this won't be a good game box, read the goddamn article.

Just like everything else in life, this sucks.
Everywhere in commercialism there is someone withholding what should be free.
And what do we do about it?
Complain about it electronically. Bitch to our friends. We sit around and let our lives be run by someone else with all the power.
Try and change this and you are labeled a criminal or insane.
Food for thought.
