  1. AI Robo Callers on FTC To Revisit Robocall Menace · · Score: 1

We've been getting Home Security calls from Oregon and Washington area codes but the caller is an Eliza type robot. It asks a recorded question and the next question is based on your answer. It's done pretty well at working the call including when you interrupt the question and then hangs up. You can just tell it's a robot question and answer package vs a real human. It's just a little too perky and the inflection is just a little off.

Most of the time though we get callers that don't leave a message. Generally I just ignore the call and then do a google lookup on the number and add it to my spammer contact (it tells me I've already looked it up so don't have to look it up again).

A funny one was when we were traveling. We'd called the banks and credit card companies to let them know we were out of town but got a call from a number not in my contact list. They didn't leave a message but called right back. I picked up the second time and they asked for me or my wife, but used my real first name (I go by my middle name) so I hung up. Then they called my wife's number. Since she was driving, I snagged it, cursed them out and hung up again. Turns out it was one of the banks. :) We received an e-mail asking us to contact the bank to confirm we were out traveling. We did tell them that they should identify themselves when calling though :)

  12. Yea, a _bit_ high :) on Ask Slashdot: Why Are Hearing Aids So Expensive? · · Score: 2

I went in a year or so ago to have my hearing checked and found out my ranges but in general everything checked out as ok.

The doctor said I would benefit from getting a hearing aid due to the loss of hearing in one part of my range (bit higher than it should be but not deaf). She was going through the brochure and showing me the aid, a nice one about half the size of a bluetooth ear set. Her nurse checked my insurance company and it didn't provide coverage for hearing aids but I was still interested in the information.

As she was going through the pitch, she was saying "49" "95" as in $49.95. I'm thinking that's a pretty decent price and said that's not too bad, I'd like the one with the red shell. She didn't have any in stock having just sold the last one but could order one for me. She'd have to have a non-refundable $50 deposit though.

And I'm ..ooOO( 50 buck deposit on a $49.95 item? That sounds weird )OOoo..

So I asked and she said, "no, $4,995.00. You thought I meant $49.95??"

Ahh, no. Sorry. It's not all that bad, thanks anyway :)

It seems to work fine for what I use it for; an ssh window to servers I administer and the ability to run a browser with the occasional Open Office spreadsheet doc to review.

I really don't have a bunch of time to muck with X servers and package dependencies, and since I rebuild the box from time to time to test new distributions, mucking with the X server is really pointless.

Actually, this is what got my wife going and me off of antiperspirant and to deodorant (or perfume for the pits):

    From Wikipedia: Aluminium neurotoxicity

Aluminium, present most often in antiperspirants, but not usually present in non-antiperspirant deodorants, has been established as a neurotoxin.[24][25][26][27] At high doses, aluminium itself adversely affects the blood–brain barrier, is capable of causing DNA damage, and has adverse epigenetic effects.[24][28] Research has shown that high doses of the aluminium salts used in antiperspirants have detrimental effects to a number of species such as non-human primates,[29] mice,[30] and dogs.[31]

Experiments with mice applying aqueous solution of aluminium chloride to the skin resulted in "a significant increase in urine, serum, and whole brain aluminium"[32] and transplacental passage.[30] A 2001 study showed that the use of aluminium chlorohydrate, the active ingredient in many antiperspirants, does not lead to a significant (vs. ingestion via diet) increase in aluminium levels in the body with one-time use.[33] The Food and Drug Administration "acknowledges that small amounts of aluminium can be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and through the skin."[34]

Although I think she also found some quackery website on how it might be connected with Alzheimer's as well.

Generally I just let it roll through BSOD's until it gets through whatever the issue is and comes up.

There have been suggestions to upgrade the drivers, however I have the most current set. If I go with the Microsoft recommendation (always have the flag in my status bar) and update the driver, the system bails and I have to roll it back.

This has been going on through Windows XP Home and XP Pro as well as Windows 7 now. I'm hesitant to update drivers since I've killed the machine in the past with updates forcing me to roll back the version and now the cards aren't supported.

I did check for EMET based on the CERT article but EMET isn't in that location. I'll have to check further and see if I can just add it along with the EnableUnsafeSettings key and see what that does.
