  1. Re:My MacBook Experience on Apple's Growing Pains · · Score: 2, Interesting

In reply to this. I've been using my MacBook for a month and I also don't seem to have that much trouble with it. This is the first Mac that I own, but I support Macs at work and they just seem to work. Anyways, back to the MacBook. I've had it for a month and it's been working great except for a few issues that could probably be fixed with a firmware update.

    1. The whine only happens under intense load. That is while running Word under Rosetta while also using Parallels or compiling (DarwinPorts).
    2. Heat. Yes, it does get hot, but not enough to burn someone. It's warm enough though that at times especially the Bay Area summer you don't want to leave it on near you while napping. It may release even more heat!
    3. Sleep issues. Sometimes the sleep doesn't always work correctly especially coming out of sleep mode. But that's every once in a while not really all the time.
    4. Scratches. I take my MacBook in my backpack without any protection on it, so it's gonna get scratched. (Think of it as a big iPod :))

Other then that I love it! It's been rock stable. I do all my development on it and it's just an awesome experience especially coming out of Windows and Linux. Things just work and I haven't had any other issue associated with it. I guess the sound could be louder, but we can't win them all. Overall I don't know about others, but this machine is just nice and I will buy more Apple products later on, count on that!

What are you talking about. Mac OS X is a derivitive of BSD so therefore it's running on the OS that was created there.

Yes. I bought this book in India, but I paid more along the lines of $10. It's a good idea to buy a lot of these books when you go to India. The content is the same just the paper quality is a tad different and is softcover. The book prices here are completly ridiculous.

  8. Re:I agree! on Bill Gates Proclaims US High Schools Obsolete · · Score: 1

Being a high school student I must say high school has been a waste of my life! Everything relevent that I have learned was from reading books or researching stuff off the internet. High school as I have learned in the past few years isn't so much about learning things as much as it is about memorizing the crap out of different subjects for stupid tests. All my AP classes we don't learn anything meaningful we just memorize stuff so we pass a stupid test later on. Wasn't school about learning?

Plus all the "important" stuff that is considered by the students is just a popularity contest. Oh I want to be homecoming king or homecoming queen! Wtf? How is that gonna help in life, and many of my teachers actually take time off from class to let the people running to talk. My God! I swear #1 time waster. Many of the students in school have no modivation to learn so why even bother to keep them in high school wouldn't it just be better if they were sent into the workforce early?

The way our schools are run is basically broken and there's no real way to fix it. We have to start from scratch and redo our entire education system.

  10. Good luck! on Starting an After-School Computer Club? · · Score: 1

It was pretty easy for me an my friend to start a club at my school. The problem is getting people to join. A had the same reason to start a club as you had! My school has a computer academy, but it was bullshit, no real computer work, working with diff OSes. It was basically creating webpages which is pretty lame.

My friend and I are not focusing just on computers, but technology in general, basically a lot of technology related stuff that is posted here on slashdot we will be discussing. That way it won't get tedious with just computers.

Well I hope you get it off the ground! A BTW i'm a sophomore too so your not alone.
