  1. Real Longevity on Best Way To Store Digital Video For 20 Years? · · Score: 1

If you can tolerate a little extra effort, why not go for the gold standard in longevity? Collect your favorite videos and print them out. Printed matter is incredibly stable, if you can keep the mold and silverfish at bay. I'm no collector, but I have a number of perfectly readable books that were printed prior to 1900.

Of course, you'll still have to find a player that can recognize the file format, and typing all that back in might be daunting, but your great-grandchildren will be able to watch, and wonder who the heck all those folks are.

  2. Some are just sleeping. on Math on iPhones Just Doesn't Add Up? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The only iPhone I've actually held in my hand was not activated. My nephew got it during an internship, when that ended, the AT&T account was terminated and they let him keep it. It's just sleeping, waiting for the day he feels like paying to use it. But it's not in any inventory anywhere.

  3. Re:I have the Kindle, and recommend it on Which eBook Reader is the Best? · · Score: 1

Text search? I'm still using the Palm IIIxe, which goes everywhere with me, does PIM stuff and has full text search on the books I carry in pdb format. Even with regular use, runs a month on 2 AAA batteries. I can read from the backlight screen in the dark, I've got some nice little aps like a graphing calculator. And the pages flip instantly.

Somebody's gonna hafta do a lot of late nights to design something that will convince me to switch.

  4. Re:Medicine a non-science? on The Obesity Epidemic — Is Medicine Scientific? · · Score: 1

Granted, a great deal of science is committed in the name of Medicine, but medicine was NEVER a science. It has always been and always will be art. Why are they called "practitioners" after all? At the root, one sees a problem, guesses what might work, tries it and sees what happens. I hope you can agree that not all trial and error is science.

Bloodletting? Lobotomies? Stomach staples? Where is the scientific rationale for those practices?

But watch an accomplished diagnostician determine the root cause of a bag of symptoms by making a couple of observations and asking a few possibly slightly odd questions. High art, and a noble, praiseworthy calling. Especially when an effective cure is available for use.

  5. Rustler's Rhapsody!!! on What's Your Favorite Underappreciated Movie? · · Score: 1

How could a movie with a title like that fail to attract a crowd?? Especially since it's a campy Western with plenty of music? I first saw this one on TV, but it has just the right tone.

Our hero arrives in town wearing immaculate white leather, strolls into the run-down bar and orders a glass of milk. When he gets the only possible reaction from the bartender and the other patrons, he adds 'With a hair in it'. Hard to find, but well worth renting.
