I think here at slashdot Troll is used to defame the user that made the comment, and Flamebait is used to defame the actual comment more than the user.

This is because 'Troll' is an insult. If you call someone a Troll, you hope to hurt their feelings. The reason why you want to hurt them, is because of the reasons given in the post above - usualy because the the person posted a comment that showed arrogance or the wrong facts. Usualy trolls are people that dislike linux.

Meanwhile flame bait is branded to a comment when the comment goes againts the general values / ideas. Usualy moderators brand flaimbait to comments where the poster mentions windows in a positive sence

  6. java code on How To Write Unmaintainable Code · · Score: 1
    39. In Java, disdain the interface. If your supervisors complain, tell them that Java interfaces force you to "cut-and-paste" code between different classes that implement the same interface the same way, and they know how hard that would be to maintain. Instead, do as the Java AWT designers did - put lots of functionality in your classes that can only be used by classes that inherit from them, and use lots of "instanceof" checks in your methods. This way, if someone wants to reuse your code, they have to extend your classes. If they want to reuse your code from two different classes - tough luck, they can't extend both of them at once!

I think the AWT designers probably had a good reason for designing the code that way..I'm not sure, but I'm guessing is that the classes used by the AWT are 'heavyweight' components that are provided by the OS, which might have restrictions on subclassing. Also Java does not support multiple inheritance, so inheriting from more than one class would be impossible..

The page was a Good read anyways! :)

  13. Re:A dingo ate Telstra's baby - on Telstra Opening Network · · Score: 1

When telstra was a monopoly, it was 100% government owned.

Being government owned, it did not make profits as big as it does now.. The company often had to provide services that resulted in very low profit margins, particularly for services that were provided for the rural and outback of australia.

Low profits from the rural australia didn't matter to Telstra as much as the extra votes the government would get in favor during the next election! Usually, the extended coverage and affordable costs kept the voters happy..

Since telstra has recently started to privatize, there is growing fear that competition might actually be bad..

To compete successfully with other tel-co's, telstra would have to cut back on spending on those low profit margin services, and divert the funds to more needed paces so that they could be used to curb competition.

In this case, telstra might cut spending on the rural / outback service, in order to to decrease the cost of a local urban call, so that it would match the competition.

As for now, competition is mainly in urban areas

Luckily, telstra still remains 50% government owned, so that low profit services can still operate.. Recently 400 million dollars has been set aside for telstra to install the CDMA cell phone network. Why CDMA? I don't know.. we already have a GSM network covering over 90% of the population... I guess the farmers have been complaining again..

  17. We snob perl? on White Camel Award Nominations · · Score: 1

Perl, being a great language, doesn't get much recognition from the academic community.
How many times do you see perl mentioned in a programming language text book??

You find that perl is often snubbed by all CS courses, for traditional imperative programming languages (and ofcorse the almost useless functional and declarative languages)..

My guess to why this is occurring is that perl brakes away from the traditional programming language design rules (or current trends) so much that it is viewed as inferior. While every traditional imperative language can have a 'record' data type, Perl can have none... Pointers in Perl are all but gone.. and all variables are global, unless explicitly declared.. - and those are just one of the many examples to why this language is viewed as a step back. However, these features are what make the language better, and I could go on about the many superior features that perl has that are not found in any of the major languages..

I nominate the person who's quest would be to re-write the text books, and put at least a page on the most Practical language on Earth, Perl!
