We found the same thing. Database access was magnitudes more time consuming than a bubble sort vs. quick sort.
We used this tool Ironeye
to capture and time everything the app was sending to the db. Fixed some ugly problems as a result... Biggest lesson: combine queries. Which sometimes requires not encapsulating or initializing data objects in quite the same way.
Anyway, it's good to know what your app is actually doing to the db. IE basically just swaps your JDBC driver and captures all the driver's interactions with the db.

"It is far from over," said Jack Darakjy, the attorney representing the plaintiffs. "We will appeal the decision. If we need to, our clients are prepared to take this all the way to the Supreme Court."
Or, if you are politically connected in New Jersey, maybe you just go to your party and get them to take up your crusade.
