I had the firmware updated allright, I was using 10.2.4 uptill then. But thanks for the tip.
Here's how I recovered:
I booted from 10.2 cd and reinstalled, then reapplied the 10.2.5 update, and no probs this time.
Imagine my rejoicing when after all that my mail-accounts, address, prefs etc were 'imported' (using the 'save previous system' in the 10.2 installer)
Mail is crispier, so is safari, but boot- time has gone up a little -but who cares if you can have days and days of uptime without probs?!
