No No.. I wasnt even implying that was possible... Redmond hasn't even come to know and love publically selected mirrors... We are stuck with becoming psuedo world citizens in the sense that we are limited by the fact that everyone else in the world is using windows update... I hated that about windows... now, when I want to update anything - I emerge sync and emerge -u world in Gentoo Linux, and the world rejoices.

That's a prime example of survival of the fittest, and the true formula for the best software. Competition is the key, and not just inter-OS competition like Outlook->Evolution, but things like different ftpd variants, different crons, syslogs, etc - Gentoo Linux has most openly encouraged this variety from what I can see..

I wasn't implying that - just that the LARGEST example of closed source in existence... I mean, the bug fixes in things like phpMyAdmin or Apache etc get fixed much faster than things like IIS, Office, etc... probably because the manufacturer feels the need to "batch" updates because they don't allow the user the ability to do nightly updates, or any "non-milestone" updates. When stuff breaks, its fixed and gets sent out to the world fairly quickly...

It's ok Anderson - you can stop fighting for something you obviously didn't put much thought into. That was the quickest story change I've seen in a while.

You would have mission critical/security critical processes running on a Win32 kernel and mundane process running on a *nix kernel? Isn't that a really warped view of the "Ghost Dog" (movie) ninja principles? "Treat matters of great importance lightly, and matters of little importance seriously." (something like that) Ultimately you make a very bad case for closed source operating systems.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered the world over - but, in light of this post - I'm left wondering what Linux distribution I should run... if I do at all. I run FreeBSD for all my server operations, and have used Windows for development, multimedia, etc for years. I run XP right now - with multiple monitors.. and as long as multiple monitors are supported, I want to move off windows completely. I really don't know whether to stay with FreeBSD across the board - or admit that Linux is a great "desktop Unix" at the absolute least. If there are any hard-core enthusiasts out there with some free time - could you sell me on an operating system so i can choose already? Thanks!
