  1. Just to sort things out... on Trolltech Releases First Qt 4 Technology Preview · · Score: 4, Informative
For those who are uniformed or unaware, QT is dual licensed:

Firstly, under a commercial license (which is ~$1000)

Secondly, under the GPL for non-commercial usage only

However, QT for Windows is not released under the second license, meaning that if you want to develop with QT and the Windows platform - even if you are a non-commercial entity - you must purchase a commercial license (or manage to persuade the nice folk at TT to grant you a license, as a few open source projects have managed to do).

I feel this limits the target market... as one of the reasons to even begin coding in QT (other than the WONDERFUL documentation :p), is the promise of cross platform availibility. I have heard it is possible to compile under win32 platform with cygwin and mingw - but I cannot confirm this

Anyway, as I develop primarily for *nix platforms, this is not a big issue for me, but I would like to see QT opened up for the windows platform. That way I'm not limited in the future if I decide to work with another platform.

Excuse my ignorance, yet I do not know much about malaria. Why is it such a problem in the third world? I know it has something to do with mosquitoes... yet it is not a problem in the western world.

Why is it unheard of here, yet so rife in 3rd world countries? Do we have ways of prevention? I heard about an asian country trying to kill off their mosquito population to try eradicate this.

If I remember correctly it was DDT or something similar used in Europe to kill off the anopheles mosquito that causes malaria.

And finally, how long is it before the disease evolves to be resistant to this vaccine? We know this is the case with me any other so called "cures".

Also, considering that the board is dead...
How are you meant to know what parts are working? It would be a bitch to test every single component.

Anyway, I don't really see any good use for it. Just a nice hack and effect factor :P

We are not 'manacled' to this 'outdated, ridiculos technology'. We simply choose to use it for portability. Every computer built in say the last 20 or so years has a floppy drive (some new computers, do come without them however), so you know whatever you have on there will work. Regardless of wether they have a CD bootable BIOS or anything like that.

Chances are these days we do not need floppies, but nothing is forcing you to use them :)

An old box of mine doesn't have a CD drive, only a floppy and network connections. If we want to support _ALL_ hardware (the point of these boot disks) we need to support floppy disks - until the day comes when they are phased out.

They still have many years left in them, just like the VCR - they are inferior and absoloutely lacking compared to todays technology, but companies and people like to stick to the tried and tested

Get it right before you go off flaming others. *nix does not refer only to Linux. It refers to BSD, commercial unixes and anything based on UNIX. Get your facts straight...

Linux a toy OS? Hardly. In your experiences (if any), what do you find that Linux lacks in? It rivals/betters most of the commercial unix's out there, so if you don't have anything constructive to say, please don't waste mine - or others - time.

I am also an open-source (not open-sores) advocate, yet this post had NOTHING to do with open source. I was simply stating what is true and proven fact.

Afaik there is no support I know of - don't ask me why - I looked into it a while ago and was aghast. I know that BeOS (ver. 5) has a feature like this, and can't imagine it being overly difficult to create.

Hardly... *nix support for commercial games is increasing as we speak. Orginizations like Icculus and LGP (and its sub-branch angry pixels) become more popular day after day.

While mac and other *nix support is not near the level of Microsoft gaming, it is increasing with every breath we take. Microsoft is an O/S made for gaming - it is short and sharp. Other unix's are made for stability and long term performance over short term gains.

Comparing Halflife on my dual booted win2k and Slackware box shows almost no difference in fps - just that windows leaves a lot of leaked memory behind when I am done...

Anyway, I should stop ranting as I am tired and probably only half coherent. In conclusion, Microsoft is not 'obviously better' than any other O/S - it just has more support for the sheep that use it :)

So you're basically saying that Telstra BigPond is the Australian version of AOL then? Maybe thats why AOL is blocking them, their customer service is worse the AOLs and AOL prides itself at being the worst at customer service.

No, Telstra BigPond is nothing like AOL. Telstra is simply an overpriced, mainstream isp. They are half (somewhere around there) owned by the government. DO NOT buy services from them - for many years they have had a monopoly on Australian internet services and their prices are outrageous and even laughable.

But don't worry. AOL is also in Australia. They have just launched a new broadband initiative that looks like it was designed by a mentally disabled 12 year old. We are now being bombarded with ads meant for that 12 year olds peers, for the 'new' services available. Pleeasse... how long has broadband been available around the world...

And please, one/two/three gigabyte caps are old news. Try whirlpool.net.au for more info - I have seen unlimited 256k for 69.95$ a month. This is still rather behind in terms of other countries - but good for the Australian standards.

The small isp's have been screwed over for years in Australia, but it is now coming to an end. Many have joined alliances - and soon - reliable & affordable internet (above 56k :) will be available for the Aussies!
