This is truly an old subject. Byte magazine showed this type of "optimization" and Dr. Dobbs has had numerous discussions on this over the years. Every CS major I was in school with in the early 90's saw this type of thing going on and we all just tossed the problem aside as Intel was the only real power in the x86 world at the time but I hope AMD has the fortitude to stick with this attack long enough to change a few things for all of us. I personally could care less who is "in the lead" as I am not a fanboy one direction or the other... I just buy whichever is more suitable at the time. However, the last time I ran in to this problem with Intel it was when I was putting together a recording studio for a client in Germany and we noticed that the Athlon ran the same code 30% slower than the Intel, even though the Athlon was at a higher clock and ran every other application 50% faster than the Intel.
Again, this attack is long overdue from many people's perspectives.
