I have to agree with you. I currently am running three systems with FreeBSD. These were all installed over FTP. I have never bought a FreeBSD CD.
In 1999, just over 8,000 paid copies of BSD server software were shipped. This would give BSD about 0.9% share of worldwide Unix server operating environment shipments.
With how easy and convenient it is to install the free BSD's from the Internet, I am still surprised the numbers were so high. This is assuming the numbers are only of BSDi's version. Just imagine the number of the Free-Net-Open BSD's installed there are.:)
If someone was whining in your ear non-stop, would it be "your decision" to walk away, or would you be forced to, to save yourself a headache?
It looks like you are the one splitting hairs. A comment like "would you be forced to, to save yourself a headache?" is not saying anyone actually forced someone to do something. It is saying someone was trying to avoid a headache from incessant urging.
Example:
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Child: Mom, can I have it?
Mom: Ok! Here you can have it. Just be quiet.
The child did not make the mother to give it to him/her, but through persistance convinced the mother to give it.
Its tiresome that you are taking my comments out of context, and responding over and over to the wrong thread. If you like, you can respond to my original thread to the original bigot.
The original poster said RMS did not force Guido, and Guido did it because he wanted to. My comments have been on target. Saying I am off topic will not make your logic any better.
Two other posters with one comment by Guido and myself with another show without a shadow of a doubt that Guido was annoyed with the FSF's incessant urging to make Python GPL-compatible. It is not forcing. Only you have accused others of using that term. They only implied coercion by threat of headache. As I have stated many times, this is NOT by force.
I can't help you to see the truth. Oh, well. Life goes on.
Sorry, you don't respond to a deep thread and tell me how I am wrong when the argument was whether or not RMS was forced. He wasn't.
Do you mean Guido? I am not claiming he was forced but strongly urged. Reread the link you provided. I found this at the end of it:
Anyway, I removed the acceptance ceremony from the 2.1 license, in the hope that this would satisfy the FSF. Unfortunately, the FSF's response to the 2.1 license (see above) seems to suggest that they have changed their position once again, and are now requesting other changes in the license. I'm very, very tired of this, so on to the next question!
Guido says it quite elegantly.
Again, nice try.
At what? I proved that the FSF was urging--this is different than forcing--Guido to make changes in the license to be GPL-compatible. The quote above proves it.
Nobody "forced" him. My point has been made... again.
Actually, nope. From the original poster:
I know RMS isn't forcing anyone to use the GPL or a compatible license,...
He, like many of us, wonder why others are so strongly urged to switch to a GPL-compatible license while their software is using a license they are happy with. It was even open source.
This type of article might get more children interested in science. Who needs Quake when you can, in reality (what's that?!?), blast things with multiple lasers into oblivion. Just tell them only scientists are allowed to do it.
I am staying on XFree86 v3.3.6 + UTAH until either nVidia opens their drivers or I get another card. Unless nVidia changes their stance I will NOT be purchasing an nVidia card in my next machine.
BTW, I run FreeBSD so not even the closed source drivers are an option.:(
Does anyone know if the XFree86 drivers support minimal hardware-accelerated 3D graphics on a TNT2 Ultra? Maybe close to the UTAH drivers?
Hmm...interesting. I became tired of RC5-64 tests when I realized brute force was not going to break it within a short amount of time (less than a year). Areas where spare cycles should go (or at least where I would put them in no particular order):
1) Cancer research.
2) Asteroid scanning.
3) SETI.
4) Encryption algorithm testing (non-brute force). How this would work is a good question. I don't know.
Basically, I prefer usage for science. Maybe someone can provide a list of the distributed projects out there? Not DDoS!:)
There is no indication of how these respondents were selected, and how representative they were. I am sure anyone can pick 700 respondents who will show 100% Linux or BSD loaded on new servers.
I wonder if they pick randomly from the companies which buy their reports.
Actually, the article probably avoided the answer because it might have calmed down the flames and therefore the number of hits on the page. Advertising rules all.
Respondents were screened to ensure they were knowledgeable about server purchases over the quarter, and they were asked what percentage of their server purchases were Linux servers, he said.
"We went to end users, rather than looking at just sales numbers, and asked them what servers they had bought over the past three months and what operating system they had installed on it over the same period," Hewitt said. "There was no question about whether Linux was preinstalled or not, we simply asked about new shipments and this is what we found."
Just Microsoft is involved does not necessarily mean the numbers are bad. It is hard to say.
Yes, who would actually be entertained by something as horrible as audio-only transmission. I guess people really disliked the radio broadcast of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.;)
It sounds like scanning on the e-mail server would be a good thing to do. I also hear that filtering out VBS files at the server would provide a big reduction in the virus population. Virii thrive on Outlook's "feature" to process VBScript.
In addition, here are some options that show up on a scan of the FreeBSD ports system.
cd/usr/ports/security
make search key=virus
Output (condensed (non-dairy)):
Port: amavis-perl-10
Path:/usr/ports/security/amavis-perl
Info: Mail Virus Scanner (uses external antivirus)
I started out with SLS--I had forgotten the meaning of the acronym--around 0.94 or so mark. Maybe it was 0.99.14. It was such a long time (Internet time) ago. Actually, I had tried Linux much earlier (v0.77?), but its shell was not up to much (ash). Besides, I was just starting out with Unix.
I also upgraded that sucker while mostly following Debian and Slackware for file system structure. I did it all the way up to Linux 2.2.12.
Eventually, my system became unstable. It was probably due to a bad compiler. You know. The one compiled with bad memory.:( Too many binaries had been affected to even attempt repair.
Since then I have switched over to FreeBSD. I no longer have the time nor inclination to worry about glibc incompatibilities or where the files went. Now I have more time for development as opposed to solid administration.
Before anyone complains, I do realize a Linux distribution would have solved this, but I picked FreeBSD due to several more criteria I was looking at (i.e., extensive man pages, standard file system layout, libc and kernel sync, and central repository using CVS).
From Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich:
"I would note that the FCC's fines for phone companies' violation of the law are up to $100,000 per violation, capped at $1 million," he said, noting that Powell in his recent testimony called those amounts "trivial" to Bells and "the cost of doing business."
I think Powell and other Republicans grok. I noticed all of the comments in the article against the bill came from Republicans. There are also some Democrats against it as well.
I use FreeBSD, so don't let other know what I am about to say.:)
I believe NetBSD would support all of those hardware platforms you mentioned. Unfortunately, I do not believe it has support in Samba concerning ACL's, but I do not know for certain. Check out Samba to see what OS's it supports ACL's.
FreeBSD is mainly an x86 OS with some support for a couple of other platforms.
When I am allowed to buy some more software by my better half, I will. I just can't wait to buy BSD 4.4. :)
I have to agree with you. I currently am running three systems with FreeBSD. These were all installed over FTP. I have never bought a FreeBSD CD.

What I find surprising, after some of their past mistakes (i.e. DoJ Trial), you'd think they would be more careful.
:)
And lose an endless source of great entertainment?!? I hope they never learn.
Then they claimed to have moved over to Win2000. Oops. :)

Thanks. I checked the websites out and noticed a beta version for download. Check out the news section here: http://nvidia.netexplorer.org/
The kernel closed-source drivers will not work with FreeBSD. They are Linux-only. :(
I guess you would be the first to really appreciate the numbers from IDC. Yes?
This type of article might get more children interested in science. Who needs Quake when you can, in reality (what's that?!?), blast things with multiple lasers into oblivion. Just tell them only scientists are allowed to do it.

Maybe someone can make a Heathkit out of it.
Might he have the stats on the BSD's. People from the BSD community are curious. :)
TIA

:)
I guess they have too much taste to actually watch it over there. I personally found it horrible, and I am an American.
In addition, here are some options that show up on a scan of the FreeBSD ports system.
What do people typically do for desktops with FreeBSD - can you run KDE or GNOME?
Both will run on FreeBSD. Personally, I run Enlightenment v0.16.5.

:)
Since he pretends to be Theo, they can pretend to audit the code.
