Actually, there are companies like Wincor Nixdorf that have written POS applications for their intel based linux terminals. I happen to be looking at a Beetle XL right now with their application on it, right before I pop in our redhat Kickstart disk to blow it away and load our java based POS app that we're currently piloting in some european stores. Should things go well, we'll be deploying it to all of our european and american stores. Down with 4690!(grin)
(cough) Have you ever priced an IBM SSA drive? Scsi it's not. We're running many many terabytes of Shark storage here, most of which is attached to either the Mainframes or the SP complexes, and the cost of a 36GB or 72GB SSA drive are STAGGERING.
Speaking of using alot of IDE disks, is there currently a project to use a Linux machine as a Fiber Channel target? All of the current Fiber Channel RAID adapters are way on the expensive side, and (after googling for it), there's very little information on people using a Linux machine as a cheap Fiber Channel target... The adapters and cables are cheap, and many people have a few = 300mhz boxes around that would be able to function as Fiber to IDE service processors...
