I'd have to agree. I think it's probably software that launches, allocates it's own ip address as a server does, and listens for incoming connections to the embedded image tag in the email. Kinda cool, but nothing someone couldn't whip up in Python or (insert language here) in 30min.
What I'd like to know is if he was using a proxy or somesuch to hide his ip, or if he was smart enough NOT to have HTML displayed. Then the issue becomes more interesting.
